Addressing Gearbox Health Monitoring Challenges for Helicopters: A Machine Learning Approach.

An Acad Bras Cienc

December 2024

Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica (ITA), Departamento de Sistema Aeroespaciais, Pca. Mal. Eduardo Gomes, 50, 12228-900 São José dos Campos, SP, Brazil.

The transmission gearbox of military helicopters, such as the H225M, experiences intense dynamic loads, leading to the detachment of ferromagnetic particles, often due to wear or fatigue. This poses safety risks, as excessive particle detachment demands stringent maintenance. To address this, the study applies machine learning algorithms to predict particle detachment using data from the Flight Data Recorder and Health and Usage Monitoring System.

Oceanic tidal constituents and depth-integrated electrical conductivity (ocean conductivity content, or OCC) extracted from electromagnetic (EM) field data are known to have a strong potential for monitoring ocean heat content, which reflects the Earth's energy imbalance. In comparison to ocean tide models, realistic ocean general circulation models have a greater need to be baroclinic; therefore, both OCC and depth-integrated conductivity-weighted velocity ([Formula: see text]) data are required to calculate the ocean circulation-induced magnetic field (OCIMF). Owing to a lack of [Formula: see text] observations, we calculate the OCIMF using an ocean state estimate.

Reducing aviation emissions is important as they contribute to air pollution and climate change. Several alternative aviation fuels that may reduce life cycle emissions have been proposed. Comparative life cycle assessments (LCAs) of fuels are useful for inspecting individual fuels, but systemwide analysis remains difficult.

Aircraft icing due to severe cold and local factors increases the risk of flight delays and safety issues. Therefore, this study focuses on optimizing de-icing allocation and adapting to dynamic flight schedules at medium to large airports. Moreover, it aims to establish a centralized de-icing methodology employing unmanned de-icing vehicles to achieve the dual objectives of minimizing flight delay times and enhancing airport de-icing efficiency.
