Introduction: To determine which day automated refraction stabilised the first week after uneventful cataract surgery.

Methods: This was a prospective, single-blinded, randomised cohort study of 148 eyes in 148 consecutive patients undergoing uneventful cataract surgery. Automated refraction was measured from days 2 to 7 after surgery and compared to automated refraction measured 6 weeks post-surgery. We compared measurements using a hierarchical mixed-effect model.

Results: Our adjusted results did not show a statistically significant change in spherical equivalent between the first week after surgery and 6 weeks after surgery (p-values: day 2: 0.914, day 3: 0.922, day 4: 0.168, day 5: 0.211, day 6: 0.457, day 7: 0.621). We measured the spherical error as stable except for day 5, where a statistically significant change of 0.32 dioptre (p = 0.049) was detected. Similarly, the cylindrical error was also stable on all days of measurements except on day 6, where a significant change of 0.28 dioptre (p = 0.034) was detected.

Conclusion: The adjusted spherical equivalent was stable on days 2-7 after uneventful cataract surgery in our study population. However, as we observed a statistically significant difference in spherical and cylindrical errors on days 5 and 6, respectively, we could not conclude that automated refraction stabilised the first week after uncomplicated cataract surgery.

In this paper, a new sensor structure is designed, which consists of a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide and a circular protrusion and a rectangular triangular cavity (CPRTC). The characterization of nanoscale sensors is considered using an approximate numerical method (finite element method). The simulation results show that the sharp asymmetric resonance generated by the interaction between the discrete narrow-band mode and the continuous wideband mode is called Fano resonance.

Optical diffraction tomography enables label-free, 3D refractive index (RI) imaging of biological samples. We present a novel, cost-effective approach to ODT that employs a modular design incorporating a self-reference holographic capture module. This two-part system consists of an illumination module and a capture module that can be seamlessly integrated with any life-science microscope using an automated alignment protocol.

Purpose: The diagnosis of fungal keratitis using potassium hydroxide (KOH) smears of corneal scrapings enables initiation of the correct antimicrobial therapy at the point-of-care but requires time-consuming manual examination and expertise. This study evaluates the efficacy of a deep learning framework, dual stream multiple instance learning (DSMIL), in automating the analysis of whole slide imaging (WSI) of KOH smears for rapid and accurate detection of fungal infections.

Design: Retrospective observational study.

Significance: Optimal meibography utilization and interpretation are hindered due to poor lid presentation, blurry images, or image artifacts and the challenges of applying clinical grading scales. These results, using the largest image dataset analyzed to date, demonstrate development of algorithms that provide standardized, real-time inference that addresses all of these limitations.

Purpose: This study aimed to develop and validate an algorithmic pipeline to automate and standardize meibomian gland absence assessment and interpretation.

As one of the typical applications of metamaterials, the invisibility cloak has raised vast research interests. After many years' research efforts, the invisibility cloak has extended its applicability from optics and acoustics to electrostatics and thermal diffusion. One scientific challenge that has significantly restricted the practical application of the invisibility cloak is the strong background dependence, that is, all passive cloaking devices realized thus far are unable to resist variation in the background refractive index.
