Microdisks fabricated with III-nitride materials grown on GaN substrates are demonstrated, taking advantage of the high material quality of homoepitaxial films and advanced micro-fabrication processes. The epitaxial structure consists of InGaN/GaN multi-quantum wells (MQWs) sandwiched between AlGaN/GaN and InAlN/GaN superlattices as cladding layers for optical confinement. Due to lattice-matched growth with low dislocations, an internal quantum efficiency of ∼40% is attained, while the sidewalls of the etched 8 µm-diameter microdisks patterned by microsphere lithography are optically smooth to promote the formation of whispering-gallery modes (WGMs) within the circular optical cavities. Optically pumped lasing with low threshold of ∼5.2 mJ/cm and quality (Q) factor of ∼3000 at the dominant lasing wavelength of 436.8 nm has been observed. The microdisks also support electroluminescent operation, demonstrating WGMs consistent with the photoluminescence spectra and with finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations.

Optical properties of InGaN/GaN red quantum well(QW) and their microcavities were studied and compared under optical pumping. Incidence of the excitation laser from the p-side was employed for both structures in order to acquire better emission characteristics. The QW structure was grown on sapphire substrate by metalorganic vapor-phase epitaxy(MOVPE) with a blue pre-layer QW.

Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a model eukaryotic organism with a rich history in research and industry, has become a pivotal tool for studying Adenosine Deaminase Acting on RNA (ADAR) enzymes despite lacking these enzymes endogenously. This chapter reviews the diverse methodologies harnessed using yeast to elucidate ADAR structure and function, emphasizing its role in advancing our understanding of RNA editing. Initially, Saccharomyces cerevisiae was instrumental in the high-yield purification of ADARs, addressing challenges associated with enzyme stability and activity in other systems.

Amidst the pervasive threat of bacterial afflictions, the imperative for advanced antibiofilm surfaces with robust antimicrobial efficacy looms large. This study unveils a sophisticated ultrasonic synthesis method for cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs, 10-20 nm in diameter and 300-900 nm in length) and their subsequent application as coatings on flexible substrates, namely cotton (CC-1) and membrane (CM-1). The cellulose nanocrystals showed excellent water repellency with a water contact angle as high as 148° on the membrane.

The medicinal plant is rich in aporphine alkaloids, a type of benzylisoquinoline alkaloid (BIA), with aporphine being the representative and most abundant compound, but our understanding of the biosynthesis of BIAs in this plant has been relatively limited. Previous research reported the genome of and preliminarily identified the norcoclaurine synthase (NCS), which is involved in the early stages of the BIA biosynthetic pathways. However, the key genes promoting the formation of the aporphine skeleton have not yet been reported.

The Respiratory Exchange Ratio (RER), which is the ratio of total carbon dioxide produced over total oxygen consumed, serves as a qualitative measure to determine the substrate usage of a particular organism on the whole-body level. Quantification of RER by its direct conversion into %Glucose (%G) and %Lipid oxidation (%L) at a given timepoint can be done by utilizing nonprotein respiratory quotient tables. These tables, however, are limited to specific increments, and intermediate RER values are not covered by these tables.
