Purpose: The aim of this study was to group European countries according to life expectancy at birth and to determine the impact of economic growth and financial indicators on European country groups.

Method: This study planned and conducted by using life expectancy at birth time series, economic growth and financial development indicators data for the period of 1980 to 2015. European countries are classified in terms of life expectancy (LE) at birth time series data from 1980 to 2015 by using hierarchical clustering analysis method. Random Forest and Classification and Regression Tree (CART) algorithm was used to examine predictors of European country groups in terms of long-term LE time series data by using economic growth and financial development indicators.

Results: The results of this study show that Eastern and Western countries are mostly in two different clusters in terms of long-term LE time series. This study sheds light on the difference between Eurosceptic countries and other European countries. This study revealed that inflation in consumer prices, which is an indicator of economic growth, outperforms financial development indicators to predict country groups in terms of long-term life expectancy at birth data.

Conclusion: Countries in the same cluster may have similar problems and solutions in their health care systems. Priority should be given to health problems that adversely affect the life expectancy of the countries in the same cluster in order to raise the quality of life and extend life expectancy in the European continent.

Background: With the rapid aging of the population, increasing life satisfaction among older adults is essential. Negative perceptions of older adults are internalized, leading to poor mental health. This study hypothesized that participants with more negative perceptions of older adults would have lower life satisfaction.

Late-onset rheumatoid arthritis (LORA) presents a unique diagnostic challenge among older patients, particularly in poorly resourced healthcare settings. As global life expectancy increases, so does the prevalence of LORA, a condition that differs significantly from young-onset rheumatoid arthritis (YORA). This review explores the distinct clinical presentation, differential diagnosis, laboratory findings, and treatment challenges of LORA, emphasising its impact on low- and middle-income countries.

Background: Chronic neuropathic pain is a major health problem that adversely affects people's physical and mental well-being, as well as their quality of life. Percutaneous peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) may offer a minimally invasive option earlier in the treatment continuum for adults with chronic neuropathic pain that is refractory to conventional medical management. We conducted a health technology assessment of PNS for adults with chronic neuropathic pain, which included an evaluation of effectiveness, safety, cost-effectiveness, the budget impact of publicly funding PNS, and patient preferences and values.

Changing dynamics of bloodstream infections due to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium in Germany, 2017-2023: a continued burden of disease approach.

Antimicrob Resist Infect Control

January 2025

Unit 37: Healthcare-Associated Infections, Surveillance of Antibiotic Resistance and Consumption, Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology, Robert Koch Institute, Seestraße 10, 13353, Berlin, Germany.

Background: Antimicrobial resistance is a global threat to public health, with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VREfm) being major contributors. Despite their clinical impact, comprehensive assessments of changes of the burden of bloodstream infections in terms of Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) and attributable deaths over time are lacking, particularly in Germany.

Methods: We used data from the Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance system, which covered about 30% of German hospitals.

Evaluating osteopontin as a biomarker of obesity related complications before and after metabolic and bariatric surgery: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Department of Chemical, Biological, Pharmaceutical and Environmental Sciences, University of Messina, Viale Ferdinando Stagno D'Alcontres, 31, Messina 98166, Italy. Electronic address:

Background/objectives: Obesity is a major public health concern, significantly elevating the risk of developing comorbid conditions such as type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardio-vascular diseases, while also shortening life expectancy. Currently, metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) is one of the most effective long-term interventions for achieving substantial weight loss, alongside notable improvements in overall quality of life. However, evidence suggests that these procedures may negatively affect bone health, leading to an increased risk of fractures.
