Bendamustine is a preferred first-line chemoimmunotherapy regimen for indolent non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (iNHL). Emerging evidence suggests an increased incidence of late-onset complications with bendamustine-based regimens compared with CHOP/CVP; however, this evidence is limited. We retrospectively compared late-onset complications from January 2005 to May 2020 in adults with previously untreated iNHL who received rituximab or obinutuzumab with CHOP, CVP, or bendamustine. Forty-six patients received CHOP/CVP; 119 received bendamustine. No difference in incidence of late-onset infections was observed. Bendamustine led to a higher rate of prolonged and unresolved lymphocytopenia and a greater incidence of late-onset neutropenia. Many patients receiving bendamustine did not have lymphocyte recovery even three years following administration. Ongoing infection prophylaxis with bendamustine-based regimens may offset translation of these laboratory findings to late-onset infectious risk.

Department of Neurology and Rehabilitation Medicine, University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Ohio.

Neuromuscular disorders can cause respiratory impairment by affecting the muscle fibers, neuromuscular junction, or innervation of respiratory muscles, leading to significant morbidity and mortality. Over the past few years, new disease-modifying therapies have been developed and made available for treating different neuromuscular disorders. Some of these therapies have remarkable effectiveness, resulting in the prevention and reduction of respiratory complications.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how different reasons for revision surgery in adult spinal deformity (ASD) patients affect their postoperative outcomes, revealing a high incidence of reoperations.
  • A sample of 891 ASD patients was analyzed retrospectively, categorizing their revisions by cause, and assessing complications, radiographic results, and disability metrics.
  • Findings suggest that different etiologies (mechanical, infection, wound, and SI pain) lead to varying outcomes, with mechanical issues showing less improvement over time compared to others.

Late onset of biliobronchial fistula - a serious complication of hemihepatectomy for atrophic liver with hepatolithiasis: a case report and review of the literature.

J Cardiothorac Surg

December 2024

Department of Radiology, Affiliated Hangzhou First People's Hospital, School of Medicine, Westlake University, Hangzhou, 310006, China.

Background: Acquired bronchobiliary fistula (BBF) is a rare but life-threatening complication that can occur as a result of oncological processes, inflammatory reactions, parasite infections, thoracoabdominal trauma, or invasive procedures associated with iatrogenic injury. However, the potential etiology of BBF caused by instrumental issues when using ultrasonic scalpels resulting in diathermy burn and its post-burn effects has never been reported.

Case Presentation: Herein, we present a case of a 65-year-old woman who developed BBF one month after hepatectomy and presented with refractory irritating cough accompanied by yellow bitter sputum.
