Plasmonic nanostructures, of which gold nanoparticles are the most elementary example, owe their unique properties to localized surface plasmons (LSP), the modes of free electron oscillation. LSP alter significantly electromagnetic field in the nanostructure neighborhood (i.e., near-field), which can modify the electric dipole transition rates in organic emitters. This study aims at investigating the influence of Au@SiOcore-shell nanoparticles on the photophysics of porphyrins covalently attached to the nanoparticles surface. Guided by theoretical predictions, three sets of gold nanoparticles of different sizes were coated with a silica layer of similar thickness. The outer silica surface was functionalized with either free-base-tetraphenylporphyrin or its zinc complex. Absorption and emission bands of porphyrin overlap in energy with a gold nanoparticle LSP resonance that provides the field enhancement. Silica separates the emitters from the gold surface, while the gold core size tunes the energy of the LSP resonance. The signatures of weak-coupling regime have been observed. Apart from modified emission profiles and shortened Slifetimes, Q band part intensity of the excitation spectra significantly increased with respect to the Soret band. The results were explained using classical transfer matrix simulations and electronic states kinetics, taking into account the photophysical properties of each chromophore. The calculations could reasonably well predict and explain the experimental outcomes. The discrepancies between the two were discussed.

High-dose radiation therapy is a widely used clinical strategy to inhibit tumor growth. However, the rapid generation of excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) triggers the formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), which capture free tumor cells in the bloodstream, promoting metastasis. In this study, we developed a hybrid nanoparticle composed of DNase I and gold (DNase I@Au) to enhance radiotherapy efficacy while mitigating metastasis by precisely eliminating NETs.

The expanding prevalence of microbial resistance to conventional treatments has triggered a race to develop alternative/improved strategies to combat drug-resistant microorganisms in an efficient manner. Here, the lethal impact of the biosynthesized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) against multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacteria has been elucidated. AuNPs, synthesized from the extracts of the fruit, leaf and peel of the Citrus maxima plant, were physicochemically characterized by UV-Vis spectrophotometry, Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), electron microscopy and spectroscopic techniques not only confirmed the production of AuNPs of size below 100 nm but also identified the phytochemicals adsorbed onto the surface of NPs.

Deep brain stimulation technology enables the neural modulation with precise spatial control but requires permanent implantation of conduits. Here, we describe a photothermal wireless deep brain stimulation nanosystem capable of eliminating α-synuclein aggregates and restoring degenerated dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra to treat Parkinson's disease. This nanosystem (ATB NPs) consists of gold nanoshell, an antibody against the heat-sensitive transient receptor potential vanilloid family member 1 (TRPV1), and β-synuclein (β-syn) peptides with a near infrared-responsive linker.
