This study was conducted under the Italian Ministerial Decree D.M. 173/2016 which regulates the assessment of the Sediment Class Quality in Italy using ecotoxicological bioassay and chemical analysis (Weight-Of-Evidence model). The aim of this work was to evaluate the real classification obtained by the theoretically equivalent responses of nine different combinations of batteries based on six different species: Aliivibrio fischeri (inhibition of bioluminescence), Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Skeletonema costatum, Dunaliella tertiolecta (inhibition of algal growth), Paracentrotus lividus and Crassostrea gigas (embryotoxicity). Bioassays, in many cases, showed a non-bioavailability effect of the pollutants; these one highly revealed by the chemical analyses. Algal species showed responses very similar from each other. Otherwise, species used for embryotoxicity produced wide responses, consequently modifying the quality class of sediments and the handling management (i.e. landfill confinement or beach nourishment) allowed by the Law.

The RISMEAU project ( - Risks related to residues of pharmaceuticals and biocides, and antimicrobial resistance of human and veterinary origin on the water resources of the 2083 km Arve catchment located in the French Alps) was implanted from 2018 to 2024 on the SIPIBEL observatory. It was devoted to the evaluation of (i) transfers of and processes related to pharmaceutical residues and biocides from both urban sludge and manure spread on fields as fertilisers, and (ii) the environmental impacts of land spreading, in particular the ecotoxicological risks and antimicrobial resistance dissemination. The methodology was based on the physico-chemical, ecotoxicological and antimicrobial resistance (AMR - assessed by molecular biology) characterisation of leachate and soil matrices samples, and focused on organic waste products application at locally representative agronomic rates.

Micro- and nanoplastics are globally important environmental pollutants. Although research in this field is continuously improving, there are a number of uncertainties, inconsistencies and methodological challenges in the effect assessment of micro- and nanoparticles in freshwater systems. The current understanding of adverse effects is partly biased by the use of non-relevant particle types, unsuitable test setups and environmentally unrealistic dose metrics, which does not take into account realistic processes in particle uptake and consequent effects.

Electronic address:
Herbicides are among the most commonly found contaminants in freshwater ecosystems. Standard tests are frequently employed to assess their ecotoxicological impacts, but sublethal endpoints in non-target species are often not considered. In addition, ecotoxicological investigations rarely take into account that many species from field populations are naturally infected with parasites.

The application of biocides in building materials has become a prevalent practice to mitigate the growth of microorganisms such as algae, fungi, and bacteria on the façades. These can leach out from the material and reach the nearby soil environment. This study aimed to characterize the effect of façade eluates generated within different leaching experiments on total and metabolic active soil microbial community composition and functions.

The significance of histone methylation in epigenetic inheritance underscores its relevance to disease and the chronic effects of environmental chemicals. However, limited evidence of the causal relationships between chemically induced epigenetic changes and organismal-level effects hinders the application of epigenetic markers in ecotoxicological assessments. This study explored the contribution of repressive histone marks to reproductive toxicity induced by chemicals in consumer products in , applying the adverse outcome pathway (AOP) framework.
