This work presents measurements of the half-lives of excited nuclear states of Np and Fe using a liquid scintillation (LS) spectrometer and a gamma detector. A novel approach for the determination of the half-lives of some excited states is presented which uses only LS counting data from a detector with two PMTs. The lifetime of the 1st and 2nd excited states of Fe were obtained without the use of a gamma detector. The obtained value for the 59.54 keV level of Np is 67.60(25) ns. The obtained values for the 14.4 keV and 136.5 keV levels of Fe are 97.90(40) ns and 8.780(36) ns, respectively. The half-life results from this study are consistent with the average value found in the reference decay data tables and have a lower uncertainty.

We report nonadiabatic dynamics computations on CH initiated on a coherent superposition of the five lowest cationic states, employing the Quantum Ehrenfest method. In addition to the totally symmetric carbon-carbon double bond stretch and carbon-hydrogen stretches, we see that the three non-totally symmetric modes become stimulated; torsion and three different CH stretching patterns. Thus, a coherent superposition of states, of the type involved in an attochemistry experiment, leads to the stimulation of specific non-totally symmetric motions.

A new 3.2 mm H-F-X magic angle spinning dynamic nuclear polarization NMR (MAS DNP-NMR) probe was developed with a unique coil design with separate radiofrequency channels for H excitation and C or F detection to enable acquisition of H-F cross-polarization (CP) MAS experiments, direct-detected F spectra with proton decoupling, and acquisition on C with simultaneous double decoupling on the H and 19F channels as well as H-F-C double-CP experiments under low temperature MAS DNP conditions. We use these sequences to study AZD2811, which is an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API), in its pure dry state as well as in its corresponding drug delivery formulation consisting of drug-loaded polymeric nanoparticles (PNPs).

A striking example of the need to accurately capture states of double-excitation character in molecules is seen in predicting photoinduced dynamics in small polyenes. Due to the coupling of electronic and nuclear motions, the dark 2Ag state, known to have double-excitation character, can be reached after an initial photoexcitation to the bright 1Bu state via crossings of their potential energy surfaces. However, the shapes of the surfaces are so poorly captured by most electronic structure methods, that the crossing is missed or substantially mis-located.

Indane-based molecules are effective scaffolds for different pharmaceutical products, so it is relevant to analyze the relation between structure and functionality in indane derivatives. Here, we have characterized the conformational landscape and molecular structure of 1-aminoindane in the gas phase using chirped-excitation Fourier-transform microwave spectroscopy and computational methods. The rotational spectrum confirmed the presence of two conformers, which were identified based on their rotational constants and 14N nuclear quadrupole coupling tensor elements.

ConspectusPhotochemical reactions have always been the source of a great deal of mystery. While classified as a type of chemical reaction, no doubts are allowed that the general tenets of ground-state chemistry do not directly apply to photochemical reactions. For a typical chemical reaction, understanding the critical points of the ground-state potential (free) energy surface and embedding them in a thermodynamics framework is often enough to infer reaction yields or characteristic time scales.
