: Usage of ceftriaxone-based therapy to treat Methicillin-Susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) infections is a controversial issue, from to clinical studies.: We conducted a literature review using PubMed of articles with ceftriaxone pharmacokinetics parameters and built a probability of target attainment (PTA) based on PK values from stable conditions (non-critically-ill patients) with goals of T>55%, T>75%, and T>100%. Ceftriaxone's minimal inhibitory concentration from 31 MSSA strains (0.25-64 mg/L) was used to build the cumulative fraction response (CFR). The isolates were clinically relevant from blood, bronchoalveolar lavage, and soft tissue biopsy.: The results from controversies about using ceftriaxone for MSSA infections have been commonly addressed in the literature. However, variables such as (i) pharmacokinetic profile, (ii) pharmacodynamic target, (iii) site of infection, and (iv) MIC distributions may influence divergences. From this pharmacokinetics-pharmacodynamics perspective, ceftriaxone may be a reasonable option for MSSA infections when the MIC50 and MIC90 were 4 mg/L and 8 mg/L. CFR analysis demonstrated that ceftriaxone 1 g q24 h could be used if bacteriostasis is the aim (T>55%), while 1 g q12h should be used for bactericidal effects (T>75% or T>100%). These dosing regimens should be considered in other clinical trials.

Background: Testing for (SA) colonization in emergency department (ED) patients may guide prevention strategies against hospital acquired infections (HAI). This study determined the prevalence of SA carriers in a general ED population, characterized the population, and identified predictors for SA colonization.

Methods: A prospective monocentric observational cohort study in a tertiary care hospital collected nasopharyngeal swabs in 1,000 adult patients.

Background: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is still a growing concern in the field of antimicrobial resistance due to its resistance to conventional antibiotics and its association with high mortality rates. Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have been shown as a promising and attractive alternative treatment for bacterial infections, due to their antibacterial properties and potential to bypass traditional resistance mechanisms. This study aims to shed light on the antibacterial potential of adipose-derived mesenchymal stromal cell (AD-MSC) secretome against clinical isolates of Staphylococcus spp.

Fever for days: A challenging case of dalbavancin-induced fever.

IDCases

December 2024

Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Internal Medicine, Rush University Medical Center, Chicago, IL, USA.

Dalbavancin is a novel long acting lipoglycopeptide antibiotic with a favorable safety profile approved for treating Acute Bacterial Skin and Skin Structure Infections (ABSSSI) caused by Gram-positive organisms. Given its long half-life, a two-dose regimen can provide effective systemic therapy for up to six weeks, making it an appealing option to avoid prolonged intravenous antibiotic therapy. Herein, we report a case of a 27-year-old male who developed dalbavancin-induced fever while treating Methicillin-sensitive (MSSA) bacteremia.

This study aimed to summarize the clinical characteristics of acute epiphyseal osteomyelitis and acute metaphyseal osteomyelitis of long bones in children. Data of 43 children with acute osteomyelitis of long bones diagnosed and treated from November 2017 to January 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. Medical records, laboratory results, and MRI were reviewed.

The rapid and reliable diagnosis of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is essential for preventing the spread of MRSA infections and guiding therapeutic strategies. However, there is still a huge challenge in further simplifying MRSA detection procedures and improving detection selectivity to reduce false-positive results. In this study, we developed a derivative CRISPR-associated protein 9/CRISPR-derived RNA Linked Immunological Assay (dCLISA) for the sensitive and specific detection of MRSA.
