Published: July 2021

A new matrix formulation was devised for catalase immobilization. Carrageenan-alginate beads different ratios were developed and soaked into different ratios of CaCl-KCl as a hardening solution. The best formulation for loading capacity was selected, treated with polyethylene imine followed by glutaraldehyde and further studied. The best concentration of catalase for immobilization was 300U/ml and the best loading time was 6 h. The catalytic properties increased after immobilization and the immobilized catalase achieved optimum activity at a temperature range of 30-50 °C that was compared to the optimum activity of free catalase which occurred at 40 °C. Higher catalytic activity of immobilized catalase occurred at alkaline pHs than the free one which achieved optimum catalytic activity at neutral pH. A comparison between the kinetic parameters of immobilized and free catalase showed variation. The and Vmax of the immobilized catalase were 2.4 fold and six times higher than those of free catalase. The results of the study indicate that the formulated matrix can be used as a good matrix for catalase enzyme in various industrial applications.

Superoxide dismutase (SOD) and Catalase (CAT) play a crucial role as the first line of defense antioxidant enzymes in a living cell. These enzymes neutralize the superoxide anion from the autooxidation of oxyhemoglobin (Oxy-Hb) and convert hydrogen peroxides into water and molecular oxygen. In this study, we fabricated hemoglobin submicron particles (HbMPs) using the Coprecipitation Crosslinking Dissolution (CCD) technique and incorporating first-line antioxidant enzymes (CAT, SOD) and second-line antioxidant (ascorbic acid, Vit.

Cadmium (Cd) contaminants with high toxicity and mobility seriously threatens the ecological environment and human safety. Hydrangea macrophylla is a potential plant for Cd-contaminated soil remediation. Exogenous organic acids have been proven to effectively enhance the phytoremediation of soil contaminated with Cd.

Article Synopsis
  • Soil pollution with heavy metals, particularly nickel (Ni), poses risks to crop production, but using silicon (Si) with biochar could help reduce these effects.
  • A study examined the effects of different Si levels and types of biochar on corn leaf anatomy and biochemistry in Ni-contaminated soils, finding significant improvements in leaf structure and health with certain combinations.
  • The best results were observed with a specific combination of Si and rice husk biochar, which enhanced leaf dimensions, reduced Ni uptake, and boosted overall plant growth metrics like total dry matter and relative water content.

Precipitated-crosslinked multi-enzyme hybrid nanoflowers for efficient synthesis of α-ketoglutaric acid.

Cascade catalysis of glutamate oxidase (GLOX) and catalase (CAT) to perform one-pot synthetic route for α-ketoglutarate (α-KG) production offers several advantages including simplicity of operation and the generation of few reaction by-products. Nevertheless, the instability of free GLOX and CAT, the high production cost and the difficulty of recycling severely limits its industrial utilisation. Here, catalase-inorganic hybrid nanoflowers were first prepared, and cross-linked with GLOX precipitates by a macromolecular cross-linking agent dextran polyaldehyde to form a novel dual enzyme precipitation-cross-linking hybrid nanoflower (GLOX@CAT-HNFs).
