Aim: The effect of changes in physical performance during the perioperative period on the prognosis of older patients undergoing cardiac surgery has not been studied in detail. This study aimed to investigate the effect of perioperative changes in physical performance on the prognosis of older patients undergoing cardiac surgery.

Methods: A total of 223 patients were graded as either frail or non-frail according to a cutoff score of 9 based on preoperative Short Physical Performance Battery scores. The non-frail patients were further grouped into high, recovery, or decreased score groups, depending on their score at the time of discharge compared with preoperative scores. Basic characteristics, preoperative and postoperative clinical data, 6-month post-discharge mortality, readmission rates, and vital function (Kihon Checklist scores) were compared.

Results: In total, 16.1% of patients were in the frail group, while 18.4%, 35.4%, and 30.1% were in the decreased, recovery, and high score groups, respectively. The Short Physical Performance Battery scores in the decreased group were significantly lower at discharge, and the rate of readmission was significantly higher (17.7%, P < 0.05). In addition, the Kihon Checklist scores were significantly lower than the preoperative scores (5.7 ± 4.0 vs 8.6 ± 5.5, P < 0.05).

Conclusions: Both preoperative and postoperative physical performance must be considered when predicting the prognosis of older patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2021; 21: 676-682.

Introduction: The prevalence of substance use among young adults has been increasing in Turkiye. Probation as a form of execution continues to grow in popularity around the world, as it has the potential for more successful outcomes than closed institutional execution methods. However, in the face of changing societal and individual needs, the probation system must rapidly adapt to current public realities, especially with new approaches, including the use of purposeful physical movement for young adults who are obliged due to illegal substance use.

Background: New surgeons experience heavy workload during robot-assisted surgery partially because they must use vision to compensate for the lack of haptic feedback. We hypothesize that providing realistic haptic feedback during dry-lab simulation training may accelerate learning and reduce workload during subsequent surgery on patients.

Methods: We conducted a single-blinded study with 12 general surgery residents (third and seventh post-graduate year, PGY) randomized into haptic and control groups.

The demand for broadband, room-temperature infrared, and terahertz (THz) detectors is rapidly increasing owing to crucial applications in telecommunications, security screening, nondestructive testing, and medical diagnostics. Current photodetectors face significant challenges, including high intrinsic dark currents and the necessity for cryogenic cooling, which limit their effectiveness in detecting low-energy photons. Here, we introduce a high-performance ultrabroadband photodetector operating at room temperature based on two-dimensional black arsenene (b-As) nanosheets.

Suboptimal spatial utilization and inefficient access to internal porosity preclude porous carbon cathodes from delivering high energy density in zinc-ion hybrid capacitors (ZIHCs). Inspired by the function of capillaries in biological systems, this study proposes a facile coordination-pyrolysis method to fabricate thin-walled hollow carbon nanofibers (CNFs) with optimized pore structure and surface functional groups for ZHICs. The capillary-like CNFs maximize the electrode/electrolyte interface area, facilitating the optimal utilization of energy storage sites.

Objective: Whether athletes possess superior executive functions still needs further examination. Therefore, the aim of this study is to explore the executive function advantages of athletes and the differences in these advantages between open- and closed-skill sports through systematic review and meta-analysis.

Methods: Computer searches of CNKI, Web of Science, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and SPORTDiscus databases were conducted.
