Article Abstract
The etiology of Parkinson's disease (PD), a progressive nervous system disorder that affects movement, is still unknown; both genetic and environmental factor are believed to be involved in onset of the disease and its development. Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), in particular, is suspected to have a role in PD. Paired Immunoglobulin-like type 2 receptor alpha (PILRA) is an inhibitory receptor that down-regulates inflammation and is expressed on innate immune cells. The rs1859788 polymorphism is protective against Alzheimer's disease, even in relation with HSV-1 antibody titers, but no data are available in PD. We analyzed HSV-1 antibody titers and rs1859788 in PD ( 51) and age-and sex-matched healthy controls (HC; 73). Results showed that HSV-1, but not cytomegalovirus (CMV) or human herpes virus type 6 (HHV-6) antibody titers were significantly higher in PD compared to HC ( = 0.045). The rs1859788 polymorphism was not differentially distributed between PD and HC, but the minor allele A was more frequently carried by PD (68%) compared to HC (50%) ( = 0.06). Notably, the rs1859788 minor allele A was statically more frequent in male PD (65%) compared to male HC (37%) ( = 0.036). Finally, no relation was found between HSV-1 antibody titers and genotype. Results herein suggest an involvement of HSV-1 in PD and indicate a possible interaction between gene polymorphisms and this neuropathology.

Irrespective of the underlying disease, patients treated with cluster of differentiation 20 (CD20) antibodies have a higher risk of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) long or severe infection, and there are pitfalls in this diagnosis. We herein report two patients with COVID-19 pneumonia diagnosed by bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) during lymphoma remission. Nasopharyngeal swabs (NSs) were polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-negative for SARS-CoV-2, and the virus was only detectable in the lungs.

Methods: In this phase 3 study (NCT04707391), healthy participants aged 15-25 years, who had received MenACWY vaccination ≥4 years previously, were randomized (1:1) to receive two MenABCWY doses six months apart or one MenACWY-CRM dose. Primary objectives were to demonstrate the non-inferiority of MenABCWY 1 month post-vaccination versus MenACWY-CRM, with a lower limit of 2-sided 95% confidence interval above -10% for group differences in 4-fold rise in human serum bactericidal antibody (hSBA) titers against serogroups ACWY, and to evaluate reactogenicity and safety.

Despite the availability of a highly efficacious vaccine, a global resurgence of measles infections has occurred, largely due to decreased vaccination coverage and waning immunity following the two-dose vaccination schedule. This study aims to assess the cellular immune response in individuals who did not respond to the two-dose MMR vaccine and evaluate the efficacy and durability of immune responses after booster doses. An observational study was conducted involving 24 individuals who were seronegative for measles years after completing the two-dose MMR vaccine schedule.

We describe a woman with stiff-person syndrome (SPS), whose muscle spasms resulted in sequential bilateral femoral neck fractures. Orthopaedic fixation of the first fracture was complicated by increased muscle spasm, fracture nonunion and ultimately metalwork fracture. SPS was diagnosed following the fracture of the contralateral femoral neck, neurology assessment and detection of high-titre antibodies to glutamic acid decarboxylase.

Serotonin is a potent immunomodulatory neurohormone. Activities of the serotonergic and immune systems are often reported together in poultry studies with unidirectional analyses focused on serotonergic signaling mediating immune response. Considering serotonin's relevance across a range of immune-related poultry topics, elucidation of whether the immune system affects the serotonergic system can provide valuable insights into the bi-directionality of poultry neuroendocrine-immune interactions.
