Anthocyanin-Related Pigments: Natural Allies for Skin Health Maintenance and Protection. | LitMetric

AI Article Synopsis

Article Abstract

Human skin is commonly described as a particularly dynamic and complex environment, with a physiological balance continuously orchestrated by numerous internal and external factors. Intrinsic aging, exposure to UV radiation and skin pathogens are some of the key players that account for dermatological alterations and ailments. In this regard, this study intended to explore the potential skin-health beneficial properties of a group of molecules belonging to the anthocyanin family: cyanidin- and malvidin-3--glucosides and some of their structurally related pigments, resulting in a library of compounds with different structural properties and color hues. The inclusion of both purified compounds and crude extracts provided some insights into their distinctive effects when tested as individual agents or as part of multicomponent mixtures. Overall, most of the compounds were found to reduce biofilm production by and reference strains, exhibit UV-filter capacity, attenuate the production of reactive oxygen species in human skin keratinocytes and fibroblasts and also showed inhibitory activity of skin-degrading enzymes, in the absence of cytotoxic effects. Carboxypyranocyanidin-3--glucoside stood out for its global performance which, combined with its greater structural stability, makes this a particular interesting compound for potential incorporation in topical formulations. Results provide strong evidence of the skin protective effects of these pigments, supporting their further application for cosmeceutical purposes.

This review focuses on chronic pediatric skin conditions-vitiligo, psoriasis, alopecia, and eczema-and their profound psychosocial impact on children and adolescents. Currently, a comprehensive comparative analysis across these conditions is absent, and comparisons between diverse psychosocial measures are lacking. This review aims to bridge that gap through a systematic review analyzing studies from PubMed and Embase up to April 2023 according to PRISMA.

Repurposing pinaverium bromide against Staphylococcus and its biofilms with new mechanisms.

AMB Express

December 2024

Department of Laboratory Medicine, The Affiliated Changsha Hospital of Xiangya School of Medicine (The First Hospital of Changsha), Central South University, No. 311, Yingpan Road, Changsha, 410005, Hunan, China.

Antibiotic resistance by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is an urgent threat to human health. The biofilm and persister cells formation ability of MRSA and Staphylococcus epidermidis often companied with extremely high antimicrobial resistance. Pinaverium bromide (PVB) is an antispasmodic compound mainly used for irritable bowel syndrome.

2-Phenoxyethanol (PhE) is an amphiphilic organic compound frequently used as a broad-spectrum preservative in cosmetic products and other consumer goods. PhE is also used as a biocidal component in occupational settings. A previous volunteer study by our working group following oral exposure to PhE showed that PhE is almost completely taken up into the human body followed by an extensive metabolization and fast urinary elimination.

This study aimed to assess how ursolic acid (UA) can protect human skin keratinocytes from damage caused by ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation. Utilizing an omics-based approach, we characterized the features of photodamage and investigated the potential of UA to reverse HaCaT cell subpopulation injury caused by UVB radiation. The most significant changes in metabolite levels after UA treatment were in pathways associated with phosphatidylcholine biosynthesis, arginine and proline metabolism.
