Harvesting of microalgae is a crucial step in microalgae-based mass production of different high value-added products. In the present work, magnetic harvesting of was investigated using microwave-synthesized naked magnetite (FeO) particles with an average crystallite diameter of 20 nm. Optimization of the most important parameters of the magnetic harvesting process, namely pH, mass ratio (m) of magnetite particles to biomass (), and agitation speed (rpm) of the biomass-FeO particles mixture, was performed using the response surface methodology (RSM) statistical tool. Harvesting efficiencies higher than 99% were obtained for pH 3.0 and mixing speed greater or equal to 350 rpm. Recovery of magnetic particles via detachment was shown to be feasible and the recovery particles could be reused at least five times with high harvesting efficiency. Consequently, the described harvesting approach of cells leads to an efficient, simple, and quick process, that does not impair the quality of the harvested biomass.

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) has strong carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, and teratogenicity even at low concentrations, presenting a major risk to food safety and human health, hence, it is crucial to develop a sensitive detection technique for AFB1. Consequently, cadmium telluride (CdTe) quantum dots conjugated with AFB1 aptamers serve as fluorescent signal probes, whereas FeO@UiO-66-NH nanocomplexes are employed as magnetic carriers and fluorescence quenchers. FeO@UiO-66-NH reduces background signal interference, thereby enhancing detection sensitivity and Förster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) efficiency.

Efficient magnetization control is a central issue in magnetism and spintronics. Particularly, there are increasing demands for manipulation of magnetic states in van der Waals (vdW) magnets with unconventional functionalities. However, the electrically induced phase transition between ferromagnetic-to-antiferromagnetic states without external magnetic field is yet to be demonstrated.

A two-degree-of-freedom bistable energy harvester with a spring-magnet oscillator designed for ultra-low frequency vibration energy harvesting is presented in this paper. It combines magnetic plucking frequency upconversion and a variable potential function to achieve a high-efficiency response while also being suitably installed for applications with spatial limitations. A lumped parameter model of the piezoelectric energy harvester and the magnetic dipoles is applied to develop the theoretical model for the system.

The efficient harvesting of triplet excitons is key to realizing high efficiency blue fluorescent organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA) up-conversion is one of the effective triplet-harvesting strategies. However, during the TTA up-conversion process, a high current density is necessary due to the competitive non-radiative triplet losses.

How SNARE proteins generate force to fuse membranes.

Department of Chemical Engineering, Columbia University, New York, NY 10027. Electronic address:

Membrane fusion is central to fundamental cellular processes such as exocytosis, when an intracellular machinery fuses membrane-enclosed vesicles to the plasma membrane for contents release. The core machinery components are the SNARE proteins. SNARE complexation pulls the membranes together, but the fusion mechanism remains unclear.
