Dicyphine mirids are important biological control agents (BCAs) in horticultural crops. Wagner can be found in protected tomato crops in Portugal, and has been observed feeding on several tomato pests. However, the predation capacity of this species is poorly studied. In order to investigate the predation capacity of , and how it is affected by prey size and mobility, we evaluated the functional response (FR) and predation rate of female predators on different densities of four prey species: 1st instar nymphs (large mobile prey), 4th instar nymphs, eggs (large immobile prey) and eggs (small immobile prey). Experiments were performed on tomato leaflets in Petri dish arenas for 24 h. exhibited type II FR for all prey tested. The predator effectively preyed upon all prey, consuming an average of 88.8 nymphs, 134.4 eggs, 37.3 nymphs and 172.3 eggs. Differences in the FR parameters, attack rate and handling time, suggested that prey size and mobility affected predation capacity. Considering the very high predation rates found for all prey species, proved to be an interesting candidate BCA for tomato crops.

The absence of symbolic material cultural objects in the archaeological record does not prove absence of symbolic cognition. Sometimes perishable materials are selected for symbolic roles, for practical concerns or to indicate a temporary condition. Also some symbolic functions may predate the use of durable materials.

Humans are exposed to toxic methylmercury mainly by consuming marine fish, in particular top predator species like billfishes or tunas. In seafood risk assessments, mercury is assumed to be mostly present as organic methylmercury in predatory fishes; yet high percentages of inorganic mercury were recently reported in marlins, suggesting markedly different methylmercury metabolism across species. We quantified total mercury and methylmercury concentrations in muscle of four billfish species from the Indian and the Pacific oceans to address this knowledge gap.

Background: Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are being used in controlled environments to enhance crop production and pest management with most studies focusing on continuous treatments (applied throughout the entire daytime or nighttime period). Here, we tested the hypothesis that providing tomato plants with timed LED regimes (daily 3-h doses of red, blue, or far-red LED) during the day or at night may affect their traits (leaf reflectance indices, element composition, and phenolic profile), performance of two-spotted spider mites (Tetranychus urticae) (TSSM), and a species of predatory mite (Phytoseiulus persimilis).
Results: Nighttime LED regimes significantly altered leaf element composition: red LED increased K levels, blue LED enhanced Mg levels, and far-red LED enhanced Mn and Cu and reduced Zn levels.

With the rapid industrialization and urbanization of coastal areas, marine pollution (such as heavy metals) is increasingly contaminating the environment, posing significant public health risks. Eastern Guangdong, a key aquaculture and fisheries hub in China, has a growing market for aquatic products. Heavy metals persist in the environment and are difficult to degrade and bioaccumulate in marine organisms through the food web, presenting carcinogenic and mutagenic risks to humans, as top predators.

Microplastic contamination in the St. Lawrence River and Estuary (SLRE), Canada, poses potential risks to aquatic species. However, limited understanding of microplastic contamination in benthic fish, potentially more vulnerable than pelagic species, impedes effective risk assessment in this crucial ecosystem.
