[Prognostic value of bone surface in hypothyroidism detected in neonatal period].

Bone maturation at the time of diagnosis has been considered as a prognostic factor of congenital hypothyroidism. Using bone area as an index of bone maturation, we have compared the psycho-intellectual outcome of infants with high bone area (group I) at time of diagnosis, with those with low area (group II), in a population of infants with congenital hypothyroidism detected by a neonatal screening program. We found that children from group I had better performances than those from group II whatever the age of the evaluation (1, 2, 5 or 7 years). Nevertheless, the verbal performances of children from group I remained weaker than their non verbal performances and in 7 among 54, the IQ was found to be lower than 90 with a possible relationship with the thyroid insufficiency (bad compliance to treatment) in only one of them.

Background: Congenital hypothyroidism (CH) is the most common neonatal disorder, primarily caused by thyroid dysgenesis (TD). While the genetic cause has been identified in less than 5% of TD cases, there is an urgent need to investigate additional gene mutations that may be responsible. In 2018, TUBB1 was identified as a novel candidate gene associated with TD.

Epidemiology of Iodine Deficiency Disorders in North-Eastern Part of Karnataka, India.

Indian J Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg

January 2025

Department of ENT and Head-Neck Surgery, Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute, Rajarajeswari Medical College and Hospital, Bengaluru, Karnataka 560074 India.

The north-eastern part of Karnataka lies on the Deccan Plateau of the South Indian Peninsula, characterized by black soil. This region is known for its mineral resources, including a gold ore mine in Hatti (Raichur District), an iron ore mine in Toranagallu (Bellary District), and uranium deposits in Gogi (Yadgir District). However, the soil in this area is deficient in iodine, leading to iodine deficiency disorders such as goiter and hypothyroidism.

Background: Subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) is closely associated with heart failure and cardiac hypertrophy, yet the underlying mechanism remains unclear.

Methods: Cardiomyocytes treated with thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) were used as an in vitro model. Cardiac-specific TSHR knockout mice (CKO) were treated with isoproterenol (ISO) to induce cardiac hypertrophy in vivo.

The exponential increase in the rate of reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) has been accompanied by a rise in complication rates of this procedure. Of these, peri-prosthetic stress fractures can be particularly problematic due to their potential to cause significant impairment of shoulder function. Despite the association between these stress fractures and osteopenia/osteoporosis, pre-operative bone density assessment is not standard practice for elective RTSA.

Objective: Autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) is one of the most common autoimmune diseases and often causes hypothyroidism in patients. As a traditional formulation in my country, Buzhong Yiqi decoction (BZYQD) has significant effects in improving clinical symptoms of AIT and reducing autoantibody titers, but its specific mechanism of action needs to be further explored. The purpose of this study was to explore the effective targets and related mechanisms of Buzhong Yiqi decoction in AIT mice based on transcriptome sequencing technology.
