Strongly coupled dye aggregates with tailored exciton properties may find their use in developing artificial light-harvesting and optoelectronic devices. Here, we report the control of tubular pseudoisocyanine (PIC) dye J- and H-aggregate formation with tunable exciton fluorescence using lithocholic acid (LCA) as a template. The LCA-templated PIC J-aggregate nanotubes formed at a higher LCA/PIC molar ratio (≥5:1) exhibit a sharp, red-shifted absorption band (at 555 nm), intense fluorescence (at 565 nm), and shorter lifetime (200 ps), all indicating their strong superradiance properties. In contrast, the H-aggregate nanotubes formed at a lower LCA/PIC molar ratio (2:1) exhibit a significantly blue-shifted absorption band (at 420 nm) and highly red-shifted fluorescence emission (at 600 nm) with enhanced lifetime (4.40 ns). The controlled switching of the optical properties of the PIC dye aggregates achieved by controlling the LCA/PIC molar ratio could serve as an important guideline for the design of organic photo-functional materials.

Drug-assisted White Light Generation via Self-assembly.

January 2025

IISER Bhopal Department of Chemistry, Chemistry, Indore By-pass Road, Bhauri, 462066, Bhopal, INDIA.

White-light generation using small organic molecules has gained significant attention from researchers working on the interface of supramolecular chemistry and organic materials. Self-assembled multi-chromophoric materials utilizing a drug molecule and microenvironment-sensitive intramolecular charge transfer dye as an emitter offer the possibility of tunable emission. In this investigation, we focused on white light generation via the combination of a polarity-sensitive red-emitting styryl chromone (SC) and a blue-emitting anticancer and psychotherapeutic drug Norharmane (NHM) in a self-assembled micellar system.

Human serum albumin (HSA) is a key protein implicates in various physiological and pathological conditions such as renal injury, diabetes mellitus. Herein, we report an AIE-active fluorescent probe (DNI-4) for detection of HSA with a "turn on" response covering visible and near-infrared region (500 - 800 nm). Combining with a triphenylamine and two 1,8-naphthalimide moieties, the chromophore segment of DNI-4 forms a "A-D-A" type molecular architecture with the twisted intramolecular charge transfer property.

College of New Energy and Materials, China University of Petroleum, Beijing 102249, China.

Colored polymer microspheres have attracted significant attention in both academia and industry due to their unique optical properties and extensive application potential. However, achieving a uniform distribution of dyes within these microspheres remains a challenge, particularly when heavy concentrations of dye are used, as this can lead to aggregation or delamination, adversely affecting their application. Additionally, many dyes are prone to degradation or fading when exposed to light, heat, or chemicals, which compromises the long-term color stability of the microspheres.

Roadmap for Designing Donor-π-Acceptor Fluorophores in UV-Vis and NIR Regions: Synthesis, Optical Properties and Applications.

Donor acceptor (D-π-A) fluorophores containing a donor unit and an acceptor moiety at each end connected by a conjugated linker gained attention in the last decade due to their conjugated system and ease of tunability. These features make them good candidates for various applications such as bioimaging, photovoltaic devices and nonlinear optical materials. Upon excitation of the D-π-A fluorophore, intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) occurs, and it polarizes the molecule resulting in the 'push-pull' system.
