Mountain lakes are particularly fragile ecosystems undergoing important ecological and depositional transformations associated with ongoing global change. However, the history of anthropogenic impacts on mountain lakes and their catchments is much longer, in many cases featuring millennia of summer pastoral farming. More recently, the growing demand for raw materials and energy linked to industrialization, particularly accelerated since the 19th century CE, meant a further increase in human impact on mountain areas.

Pyrogenic carbon is considered an enhancer to H-yielding dark fermentation (DF), but little is known about how it regulates extracellular electron transfer (EET) and influences transmembrane respiratory chains and intracellular metabolisms. This study addressed these knowledge gaps and demonstrated that wood waste pyrogenic carbon (biochar) could significantly improve the DF performance; e.g.

Here, we test whether early visual and OCT rod energy-linked biomarkers indicating pathophysiology in nicotinamide nucleotide transhydrogenase (Nnt)-null 5xFAD mice also occur in Nnt-intact 5xFAD mice and whether these biomarkers can be pharmacologically treated. Four-month-old wild-type or 5xFAD C57BL/6 substrains with either a null (B6J) Nnt or intact Nnt gene (B6NTac) and 5xFAD B6J mice treated for one month with either R-carvedilol + vehicle or only vehicle (0.01% DMSO) were studied.

In this study the subcellular modifications undergone by cerebral cortex mitochondrial metabolism in chronic hypertension during aging were evaluated. The catalytic properties of regulatory energy-linked enzymes of Tricarboxylic Acid Cycle (TCA), Electron Transport Chain (ETC) and glutamate metabolism were assayed on non-synaptic mitochondria (FM, located in post-synaptic compartment) and on intra-synaptic mitochondria of pre-synaptic compartment, furtherly divided in "light" (LM) and "heavy" (HM) mitochondria, purified form cerebral cortex of normotensive Wistar Kyoto Rats (WKY) versus Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats (SHR) at 6, 12 and 18 months. During physiological aging, the metabolic machinery was differently expressed in pre- and post-synaptic compartments: LM and above all HM were more affected by aging, displaying lower ETC activities.

The sustainability of wave energy linked to the intra- and inter-annual variability in wave climate is crucial in wave resource assessment. In this study, we quantify the dependency of stability of wave energy flux (power) on long-term variability of wind and wave climate to detect a relationship between them. We used six decades of re-analysis wind and simulated wave climate in the entire globe and using two 30-yearly periods, we showed that not only the previously suggested minimum period of 10 years for wave energy assessment appears to be insufficient for detecting the influence of climate variability, but also the selection period for wave energy assessment can lead to an over/underestimation of about 25% for wave power.
