The sixth member of the family of MMoX structures (M=Rb, Cs; X=S, Se, Te), which contains Mo clusters, is represented by RbMoS. The Mo cluster present in the title compound results from the uniaxial trans face sharing of eleven Mo octahedra, and forms a MoS cluster unit with 44 sulfur atoms of its environment (38 inner, 6 outer ligands). The large cavities between these units are occupied by the Rb ions, which form linear finite chains.
