As the antibiotic resistance of pathogens becomes increasingly severe, it is becoming more feasible to use methods that suppress the virulence of pathogens rather than exerting selective pressure on their growth. , a dangerous opportunistic pathogen, infects hosts by producing multiple virulence factors, which are regulated by quorum-sensing (QS) systems, including the systems, systems, and systems. This study used the chromosome transcription fusion reporter model to screen the traditional Chinese medicine monomer library and found that bakuchiol can effectively inhibit the system and related virulence phenotypes of , including the production of virulence factors (pyocyanin, hydrogen cyanide, elastase, and lectin) and motility (swarming, swimming, and twitching motility) without affecting its growth.

The use of animal-borne devices (= biologgers) has revolutionized the study of marine megafauna, yet there remains a paucity of data concerning the behavioral and physiological impacts of biologger attachment and retention. Here, we used animal-borne cameras to characterize the behavior and dive duration of juvenile green turtles () in The Bahamas for up to 210 min after biologger deployment ( = 58). For a "control," we used unoccupied aerial vehicles (UAVs) to collect comparable data from nonhandled green turtles ( = 25) in the same habitats.

Unintentional drowning fatalities in Sweden between 2002 and 2021.

BMC Public Health

November 2024

Swedish National Board of Forensic Medicine, Stockholm, Sweden.

Background: Despite declining over the past three decades, unintentional drownings still account for an estimated 236 000 annual deaths worldwide. Susceptibility persists amongst demographic groups and is influenced by sex, age, and socio-economic status, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions. Due to rapidly evolving population dynamics, particularly within Europe, there is a further responsibility to understand the impact of ethnicity on the risks of drowning to guide prevention.

Sprinting to the top: comparing quality of distance variety and specialization between swimmers and runners.

Front Sports Act Living

August 2024

Aquatics Lab, Department of Physical Education and Sports, Faculty of Sport Sciences, University of Granada, Granada, Spain.

Objectives: To compare performance progression and variety in race distances of comparable lengths (timewise) between pool swimming and track running. Quality of within-sport variety was determined as the performance differences between individual athletes' main and secondary race distances across (top-) elite and (highly-) trained swimmers and runners.

Methods: A total of 3,827,947 race times were used to calculate performance points (race times relative to the world record) for freestyle swimmers ( = 12,588 males and  = 7,561 females) and track runners ( = 9,230 males and  = 5,841 females).

Swimming ability of Schizothoracinae fishes in Yarlung Zangbo River of China.

J Fish Biol

July 2024

State Key Laboratory of Hydraulics and Mountain River Engineering, Sichuan University, Chengdu, China.

The Yarlung Zangbo River is a river with abundant hydropower resources but fragile biodiversity in China. As an important benchmark for both research and ecological management, there is still a lack of knowledge about the swimming ability of fishes in the Yarlung Zangbo River. The induced flow velocity (U), critical swimming speed (U), and burst swimming speed (U) of five Schizothoracinae species were tested in this study.
