Critical Review: Considerations in Applying Avian Egg Injection Studies to Characterize Effects of Hydrophobic Organic Compounds on Wild Birds.

Chemosphere

January 2025

Ramboll, 3401 Enterprise Place, Suite 340, Beachwood, Ohio 44122, USA. Electronic address:

Egg injection has been used for decades to determine embryonic mortality and developmental effects of chemical exposures in birds. Specific egg injection methods affect how well these studies replicate the process of chemical delivery to the embryo via maternal deposition, yet few data are available to compare exposure-response relationships between egg injection and maternal transfer studies. This information gap creates uncertainty when considering egg injection studies for assessment of potential adverse effects in wild birds.

The use of Deep Learning algorithms in the domain of Decision Making for Autonomous Vehicles has garnered significant attention in the literature in recent years, showcasing considerable potential. Nevertheless, most of the solutions proposed by the scientific community encounter difficulties in real-world applications. This paper aims to provide a realistic implementation of a hybrid Decision Making module in an Autonomous Driving stack, integrating the learning capabilities from the experience of Deep Reinforcement Learning algorithms and the reliability of classical methodologies.

Integrating prior epidemiological knowledge embedded within mechanistic models with the data-mining capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) offers transformative potential for epidemiological modeling. While the fusion of AI and traditional mechanistic approaches is rapidly advancing, efforts remain fragmented. This scoping review provides a comprehensive overview of emerging integrated models applied across the spectrum of infectious diseases.

Food production does more damage to wild species than any other sector of human activity, yet how best to limit its growing impact is greatly contested. Reviewing progress to date in interventions that encourage less damaging diets or cut food loss and waste, we conclude that both are essential but far from sufficient. In terms of production, field studies from five continents quantifying the population-level impacts of land sharing, land sparing, intermediate and mixed approaches for almost 2000 individually assessed species show that implementing high-yield farming to spare natural habitats consistently outperforms land sharing, particularly for species of highest conservation concern.

In short-range microwave imaging, the collection of data in real environments for the purpose of developing techniques for target detection is very cumbersome. Simultaneously, to develop effective and efficient AI/ML-based techniques for target detection, a sufficiently large dataset is required. Therefore, to complement labor-intensive and tedious experimental data collected in a real cluttered environment, synthetic data generation via cost-efficient electromagnetic wave propagation simulations is explored in this article.
