Anthelmintics are used to control infestations of ruminants by gastrointestinal nematodes. The limited metabolism of anthelmintics in animals result in their excretion in feces. These could be piled up in the floor of livestock farms, constituting a point source of environmental contamination, or used as manures in agricultural soils where they persist or move to water bodies. Hence the removal of anthelmintics from feces could mitigate environmental contamination. We hypothesized that a thiabendazole-degrading bacterial consortium would also degrade other benzimidazole anthelmintics like albendazole, fenbendazole, ricobendazole, mebendazole and flubendazole. In liquid culture tests the consortium was more effective in degrading compounds with smaller benzimidazole substituents (thiabendazole, albendazole, ricobendazole), rather than benzimidazoles with bulky substituents (fenbendazole, flubendazole, mebendazole). We then explored the bioaugmentation capacity of the consortium in sheep feces fortified with 5 and 50 mg kg of thiabendazole, albendazole and fenbendazole. Bioaugmentation enhanced the degradation of all compounds and its efficiency was accelerated upon fumigation of feces, in the absence of the indigenous fecal microbial community. The latter contributes to anthelmintics degradation as suggested by the significantly lower DT values in fumigated vs non-fumigated, non-bioaugmented feces. Overall, bioaugmentation could be an efficient means to reduce environmental exposure to recalcitrant anthelmintic benzimidazoles.

In recent decades, microplastics (MPs) have emerged as one of the biggest environmental challenges in aquatic environments. Ingestion and toxicity of MPs in seawater (SW) and freshwater (FW) fish have been studied extensively both in field and laboratory settings. However, the basic mechanism of how fish deal with MPs in SW and FW remains unclear, although physiological conditions of fish differ significantly in the two environments.

The growing impact of climate change and escalating wildfire seasons has led to heightened ambient air pollution, potentially affecting children's sleep health. However, current epidemiological research often relies on outdoor weather data to model the environmental impacts on sleep health, potentially mischaracterizing the actual bedroom environment. To address these challenges, we conducted experiments to investigate the relationships among ambient, indoor, and personal exposure to PM concentrations and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in children.

Decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) is one of the most extensively used novel brominated flame retardants, and it has been frequently detected in the global environment. Although organisms encounter various pollutants through the intestine, the toxicity effects of DBDPE exposure on the intestine and the potential mechanisms remain unclear. Here, by morphological observation, histopathology, high-throughput sequencing, and transcriptomics methods, we evaluated the effects of environmental (0.

Industrial, agricultural, and natural pollution pose a critical problem for the Prairie provinces of Canada, with significant environmental and health concerns. This study addresses a critical knowledge gap by assessing the cumulative impacts of pollutants in the Prairie region, which hosts 40 % of the Canada's indigenous population, often living near these pollution sources. By innovatively integrating Sentinel-5P satellite data, Google Earth Engine, ArcGIS, and Python, we show the trends in CO, NO₂, HCHO, SO₂, and aerosols from 2019 to 2023 at high resolution for the entire region, which sheds new light on the dynamics that operate beyond conventional air quality monitoring.

The increasing frequency of cyanobacterial blooms, particularly those induced by Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa), poses severe economic, ecological and health challenges due to the production of microcystins (MCs). Environmental parameters such as light and nutrient availability influence MCs production, while the role of dissolved organic matter (DOM) photochemical processes in regulating these remains unclear.
