Organophosphorus pesticides (OP) affect the crops and environments, and the reliable approach to the prediction of soil sorption of pesticides is required. In this respect, we proposed a simple Chemometrics approach, in which the Tchebichef image moment (TM) method was used to extract useful information from the greyscale images of molecular structures and the quantitative model was established by stepwise regression to predict the soil sorption of OPs. Different squared correlation coefficients including the leave-one-out cross-validation (LOO-CV) () that concerns the training set and the () which concerns the external independent test set are more than 0.96. This reflects that the established model has considerably high accuracy and reliability. Compared with the literature on the strategies of quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR), the proposed method is more suitable, in which the established model shows a high predictive ability. Our study provides another effective approach to predict the soil sorption of OPs and also extends the innovative pathway of QSPR modelling.

Concentrations of pollutants like pharmaceuticals in soils typically decrease over time, though it often remains unclear whether this dissipation is caused by the transformation of the pollutant or a decreasing extractability. We developed a mathematical model that (1) explores the plausibility of different dissipation pathways, and (2) allows the quantification of concentration differences between aqueous soil extracts and soil solution. The model considers soil particles as uniform spheres, kinetic sorption towards an equilibrium (Freundlich model), and two dissipation pathways, irreversible transformation and mineralization (following 1 order kinetics) as well as the formation of non-extractable residues intraparticle diffusion.

Although the use of biochar as an adsorbent for the removal of various pollutants from wastewater is well established, the use of biochar/modified biochar for the scavenging of antibiotics from aqueous media in the Fenton-like system receives less attention. The highest kasugamycin (KSM) adsorption capacity (5.0 mg g) was obtained from the pristine biochar at the lowest initial pH of 3 in Fenton-like system.

Membrane distillation (MD) efficiently desalinizes and treats high-salinity water as well as addresses the challenges in handling concentrated brines and wastewater. However, silica scaling impeded the effectiveness of MD for treating hypersaline water and wastewater. Herein, the effects of humic acid (HA) on silica scaling behavior during MD are systematically investigated.

The volcanic soils in Chile, where a significant portion of agricultural activities take place, are impacted by the presence of veterinary drugs, including sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The study examines how different soil types influence the movement and retention of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) across four regions of Chile, focusing on conditions at a neutral pH of 7.0.

Naphthenic acids and naphthenic acid fraction compounds (NAFCs) are associated with production of unconventional petroleum resources, especially the Athabasca Oil Sands of Alberta, Canada. This complex mixture of acidic organic compounds is toxic to a variety of taxa, and so represents an important environmental management challenge. Thus, there is clear motivation to better understand the occurrence and characteristics of NAFCs in aquatic environments, their chemical behaviour, and environmental fate.
