Taenia solium is the most common parasitic infection of the central nervous system and it can cause parenchymal or extra-parenchymal lesions. Subarachnoid cysticercosis is a type of extra-parenchymal infection in which the prevalence is not known and racemose NC with cerebellar involvement has been rarely reported. The diagnosis is challenging because of its similarity to other infectious diseases or to subarachnoid involvement of systemic malignancies. Treatment usually requires cysticide drugs, however, there are no randomized studies concerning the anti-parasitic treatment in subarachnoid NC. We present a case of racemose NC in the cerebellar hemisphere to draw attention to this pathology, endemic in many parts of the world; and highlight all the current gaps in our understanding of this entity.

The mediating effect of the striatum-based connectivity on the association between high-sensitivity C-reactive protein and anhedonia in adolescent depression.

January 2025

Department of Child Psychiatry of Shenzhen Kangning Hospital, Shenzhen Mental Health Center, Shenzhen Institute of Mental Health, Shenzhen, China. Electronic address:

Background: The potential pairwise connections among high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), striatum-based circuits, and anhedonia in adolescent depression are not clear. This study aimed to explore whether hs-CRP levels in adolescents with depression influence anhedonia via alterations of striatum-based functional connectivity (FC).

Methods: A total of 201 adolescents (92 with depressive episodes with anhedonia (anDE), 58 with DE without anhedonia (non-anDE), and 51 healthy controls (HCs)) underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and completed the anhedonia subscale of the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI).

Essential Tremor (ET) is the most common movement disorder and has a worldwide prevalence of 1%, including 5% of the population over 65 years old. It is characterized by an active, postural or kinetic tremor, primarily affecting the upper limbs, and is diagnosed based on clinical characteristics. The pathological mechanisms of ET, however, are mostly unknown.

Whole Blood DNA Methylation Analysis Reveals Epigenetic Changes Associated with ARSACS.

Cerebellum

January 2025

Molecular Medicine for Neurodegenerative and Neuromuscular Diseases Unit, IRCCS Stella Maris Foundation, Pisa, Italy.

Autosomal recessive spastic ataxia of Charlevoix-Saguenay (ARSACS) is a rare inherited condition described worldwide and characterized by a wide spectrum of heterogeneity in terms of genotype and phenotype. How sacsin loss leads to neurodegeneration is still unclear, and current knowledge indicates that sacsin is involved in multiple functional mechanisms. We hence hypothesized the existence of epigenetic factors, in particular alterations in methylation patterns, that could contribute to ARSACS pathogenesis and explain the pleiotropic effects of SACS further than pathogenic mutations.

(1) Background: Hepatoblastoma and medulloblastoma are two types of pediatric tumors with embryonic origins. Both tumor types can exhibit genetic alterations that affect the β-catenin and Wnt pathways; (2) Materials and Methods: This study used bioinformatics and integrative analysis of multi-omics data at both the tumor and single-cell levels to investigate two distinct pediatric tumors: medulloblastoma and hepatoblastoma; (3) Results: The cross-transcriptome analysis revealed a commonly regulated expression signature between hepatoblastoma and medulloblastoma tumors. Among the commonly upregulated genes, the transcription factor LEF1 was significantly expressed in both tumor types.

The substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc), one of the main dopaminergic nuclei of the brain, exerts a regulatory function on the basal ganglia circuitry via the nigro-striatal pathway but its possible dopaminergic innervation of the thalamus has been only investigated in non-human primates. The impossibility of tract-tracing studies in humans has boosted advanced MRI techniques and multi-shell high-angular resolution diffusion MRI (MS-HARDI) has promised to shed more light on the structural connectivity of subcortical structures. Here, we estimated the possible dopaminergic innervation of the human thalamus via an MS-HARDI tractography of the SNc in healthy human young adults.
