Background: Screening for elder abuse can cause victims to experience feelings of unpleasantness and/or relive painful memories which can be an ethical concern. Ensuring the safety of all participants/users, in our case long-term care (LTC) residents, is of the utmost importance.
Method: Drawing from approaches used in the intimate partner violence and clinical trials literature, we developed a novel typology of harm and a series of procedures to evaluate any negative consequences that might be incurred as a result of participating in the Piloting the Elder Abuse Suspicion Index-long term care: A Mixed Methods Feasibility Study.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) affects over 55 million people worldwide and is characterized by abnormal deposition of amyloid-β and tau in the brain causing neuronal damage and disrupting transmission within brain circuits. Episodic memory loss, executive deficits, and depression are common symptoms arising from altered function in spatially distinct brain circuits that greatly contribute to disability. Transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) can target these circuits and has shown promise to relieve specific symptoms.

Background: Wandering is a common issue among individuals living with dementia. This behavior often leads to increased worry for family caregivers, as those with dementia are at a heightened risk of becoming lost. Location-tracking devices have potential as effective tools for providing independence to individuals living with dementia while reducing the risk of them getting lost.

Background: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation enhances cognition in people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Whereas conventional treatment requires daily sessions for 4-6 weeks, accelerated intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) shortens the treatment course to just 3 days, substantially improving feasibility of use in people with MCI. We conducted a Phase I safety and feasibility trial of iTBS in MCI, finding preliminary evidence of cognitive improvement.

Background: Dementia is a complex health condition that poses challenges not only to people living with dementia (PLWD) but to their families, the health system and society as a whole. Even though there is still no cure for dementia, different interventions are showing substantial contribution. mHealth-based assistive technology has shown the potential to provide efficient healthcare for PLWD and their caregivers in cognitive training, health and safety monitoring, educational support, and socialization.
