Nonliteral language represents a complex form of communication that can be interpreted in numerous different ways. Our study explored how individual differences in personality and communication styles affect the evaluation of literal and nonliteral language in the context of assumptions made by the Tinge Hypothesis (Dews & Winner, 1995). Participants watched videos of social interactions focusing on positive, negative, sarcastic, and jocular statements. They evaluated speaker intentions and social impressions and completed several personality and communication style questionnaires. Individual differences in empathy, defense style, and sarcasm use correlated with the accuracy of identifying speaker intent. Additionally, positive statements were rated as friendlier when compared to jocular statements, thereby supporting the Tinge Hypothesis. However, literal negative statements were rated as more friendly than sarcastic statements, which is inconsistent with the Tinge Hypothesis. The current results provide novel evidence for the Tinge Hypothesis using multimodal, dynamic stimuli and highlight the role of the individual personality of the recipient in evaluating sarcasm and jocularity.

Dissimilar Associations Between Stunting and Low Ponderosity Defined Through Weight for Height (Wasting) or Body Mass Index for Age (Thinness) in Under-Five Children.

Background: Wasting and stunting commonly coexist, sup-posedly due to biological and social mechanisms. In under-five children, low-ponderosity is defined as <-2SD of WHO standards for either weight for height (wasted) or body mass index for age (thin) metrics. Unlike body mass index for age, weight for height ignores physiological changes in ponderosity with age, resulting in overestimation of wasting in comparison to thinness in under-5 populations with high stunting prevalence.

Social appropriateness perception of dynamic interactions.

School of Communication Sciences & Disorders, McGill University, Montréal, Canada.

The current study explored the judgment of communicative appropriateness while processing a dialogue between two individuals. All stimuli were presented as audio-visual as well as audio-only vignettes and 24 young adults reported their social impression (appropriateness) of literal, blunt, sarcastic, and teasing statements. On average, teasing statements were rated as more appropriate when processing audio-visual statements compared to the audio-only version of a stimuli, while sarcastic statements were judged as less appropriate with additional visual information.

Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy targeting CD19 has transformed the natural history of relapsed and refractory B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia and aggressive B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Based on these results, CD19 CAR T cells have since been tested in largely incurable lymphomas, including mantle cell lymphoma, follicular lymphoma, and marginal zone lymphoma, with promising early results that raise the question of whether this cellular immunotherapy could have curative potential and change the natural history of these diseases. This article reviews these results and this hypothesis.

Metritis is a frequent problem in postpartum dairy cows. Intrauterine therapy with the antimicrobial oxytetracycline (OTC) is often used, although this therapy has not been shown to be superior to systemic therapy. The objectives of this study were to (1) determine the plasma and milk concentrations of OTC following intrauterine infusion in postpartum dairy cows with varying degrees of metritis severity; (2) determine the depletion time of OTC in an attempt to provide veterinarians withdrawal guidelines, should they use this therapy; and (3) correlate metritis severity scores with OTC concentrations in plasma and milk.
