A chemoselective and robust protocol for the γ-oxidation of β,γ-unsaturated amides is reported. In this method, electrophilic amide activation, in a rare application to unsaturated amides, enables a regioselective reaction with TEMPO resulting in the title products. Radical cyclisation reactions and oxidation of the synthesised products highlight the synthetic utility of the products obtained.

Flap monitoring with near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) facilitates early detection of vascular compromise. However, standard NIRS devices that employ two wavelengths of light to assess tissue oxygenation (StO) are susceptible to artifact from background noise and demonstrate significant variability in the clinical setting. As the number of wavelengths detected by a NIRS device is increased, the precision of StO measurements can be improved and additional chromophores other than oxyhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin can be measured.

In the present study, a cellular level response of Cyto-aa3 oxidation was investigated in real time under both time-varying and strong static magnetic fields of 5 T. Two kinds of cells, a slime mold, Physarum polycephalum, and bone forming cells, MC-3T3-E1, were used for the experiments. The oxidation level of the Cyto-aa3 was calculated by optical absorptions at 690 nm, 780 nm and 830 nm.

A method to simultaneously measure oxygenation in vascular, intracellular, and mitochondrial spaces from optical spectra acquired from muscle has been developed. In order to validate the method, optical spectra in the visible and near-infrared regions (600-850 nm) were acquired from solutions of myoglobin, hemoglobin, and cytochrome oxidase that included Intralipid as a light scatterer. Intramyocardial oxygen transport was assessed during open-chest surgery in calves by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy using a small intramuscular fiber-optic probe. Reflection near infrared spectroscopy (reNIRS) has been proposed as a novel technique for the measurement of absolute values of total hemoglobin (tHb), oxygenated hemoglobin (oxHb), hemoglobin saturation (SO2), and cytochrome aa3 oxidation status (oxCyt aa3) in living tissue. In this study, we evaluated reNIRS during physiological cerebral blood flow conditions in rats (n=6) and during the induction of global cerebral ischemia in gerbils (n=6).
