We report a bithiophene-based fluorescence probe BDT (2,2'-(((1 E, 1'E)-[2,2'-bithiophene]-5,5'-diylbis(methaneylylidene))bis(azaneylylidene))bis(4-(tert-butyl)phenol)) for recognizing ClO. BDT selectively responded to ClO, leading to a blue fluorescence enhancement in a mixture of DMF/HEPES buffer (9:1, v/v). Importantly, BDT showed an ultrafast response (within 1 s) to ClO among the fluorescent turn-on chemosensors based on bithiophene.

Radiation Damage Mitigation in FeCrAl Alloy at Sub-Recrystallization Temperatures.

Materials (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Mechanical Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA 16803, USA.

Traditional defect recovery methods rely on high-temperature annealing, often exceeding 750 °C for FeCrAl. In this study, we introduce electron wind force (EWF)-assisted annealing as an alternative approach to mitigate irradiation-induced defects at significantly lower temperatures. FeCrAl samples irradiated with 5 MeV Zr ions at a dose of 10 cm were annealed using EWF at 250 °C for 60 s.

Synthesis and Characterization of UV-Curable Resin with High Refractive Index for a Luminance-Enhancing Prism Film.

Polymers (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Chemical Engineering, Kwangwoon University, 20, Kwangwoon-ro, Nowon-gu, Seoul 01897, Republic of Korea.

A novel monomer, 9-bis[4-(2-hydroxyethoxy)phenyl]fluorene di(mercaptopropionate), with a highly refractive index, purity, and excellent UV-curable properties, is synthesized through an optimized Fischer esterification process, reacting 9,9-bis[4-(2-hydroxyethoxy)phenyl]fluorene with 3-mercaptopropionic acid. The structural characterization of this monomer is performed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, high-performance liquid chromatography, and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. The synthesis conditions are optimized using a design-of-experiments approach.

Development of an automated microfluidic system for actinide separation and analysis.

J Chromatogr A

December 2024

Dalton Nuclear Institute, The University of Manchester, Oxford Road, Manchester M13 9PL, UK; Department of Mechanical, Aerospace & Civil Engineering, The University of Manchester, Oxford Road, Manchester M13 9PL, UK.

Mass spectroscopy and microfluidic technology, when combined, offer significant advantages in radiochemical analysis sample volume and cost reduction. A microfluidic device designed for efficiency has been developed. This device separates uranium from key trace elements by utilising UTEVA® chromatographic resins and nitric acid solutions of different concentrations for adsorption and recovery.
