PROGRESSION OF PARTIAL POSTERIOR VITREOUS DETACHMENT OVER TIME.

Published: July 2021

Purpose: We investigated interindividual differences in the rate of change of posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) stage and vitreomacular adhesion area (VMAA). Crosssectional studies demonstrated increasing PVD stage and decreasing VMAA with age, but population-level means may mask interindividual variation in the rate of change.

Methods: We retrospectively evaluated PVD stage and VMAA in asymptomatic eyes of subjects who underwent repeated optical coherence tomography screening for high-risk medication use or isolated retinal disease in the fellow eye. A Turnbull estimator modeled changes in the PVD stage, and linear mixed models evaluated VMAA change.

Results: We evaluated 101 eyes of 101 subjects. Seventy-six eyes remained in the same stage. Twenty-three eyes progressed to a higher stage. Modeling of longitudinal data predicts that at age 30, time to convert to Stage 4 is 26 years; at age 40, it is 16 years; at age 50, it is 9 years; and at age 60, it is 8 years. In 37 eyes with Stage 1 partial PVD, VMAA decreased at a similar rate. The average population level decline in VMAA was 0.13 mm2/year.

Conclusion: Individuals vary in age at which they progress to complete PVD. In early partial PVD, VMAA decreases at a similar rate across individuals.

Purpose: To investigate the distribution of macrophage-like cells (MLCs) across different stages of posterior vitreous detachment (PVD).

Methods: A total of 168 eyes from 168 subjects were included. MLCs were imaged by acquiring en face OCT images at depths of 5 to 10 µm on the inner limiting membrane, as well as using B-scan OCT.

Distinct neuroinflammatory patterns between cerebral microbleeds and microinfarcts in cerebral amyloid angiopathy.

Ann Clin Transl Neurol

Univ. Lille, Inserm, CHU Lille, U1172 - LilNCog - Lille Neuroscience & Cognition, F-59000, Lille, France.

In this neuropathological study, we investigated neuroinflammation surrounding recent and old cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) and cerebral microinfarcts (CMIs) in 18 cases of cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA). We used several serial stainings and immunolabellings to identify microvascular lesions, define their recent or old stage, and characterize neuroinflammatory response (scavenging activity and astrogliosis). We found that both CMBs and CMIs induce a neuroinflammatory response, which was more pronounced in old lesion than recent.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to analyze microvascular changes around the optic nerve in patients with optic neuropathies using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA).
  • During the research, 63 eyes from patients with various optic neuropathy causes were compared to 36 healthy eyes, revealing more vascular changes in acute non-arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy than in optic neuritis.
  • Results indicated that a lower peripapillary vascular density (PVD) was linked to optic atrophy and hypertension, with some correlations between visual acuity and PVD, highlighting significant changes in microvasculature related to the condition and systemic health factors.

Background: Anaemia is a global public health issue that impacts individuals of all ages in both developed and developing countries. Anaemia is common in patients with diabetes mellitus; however, it is often undiagnosed and untreated. The main aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and associated factors of anaemia in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus admitting to a medical unit at National Hospital Kandy.

Article Synopsis
  • Bladder cancer incidence and mortality rates have remained stable over the past 20 years, with around 40% of high-risk nonmuscle invasive cases recurring or progressing.
  • In 2021, an estimated 83,532 newly diagnosed bladder cancer patients in the USA faced treatment costs totaling approximately $2.6 billion, with costs varying significantly by disease stage.
  • The economic analysis indicates that treating recurrent cases adds about $3.9 billion, leading to a total estimated treatment cost exceeding $6.5 billion for both newly diagnosed and recurrent patients, highlighting the financial impact of the disease.
