Introduction: Medication regimen complexity may be an important risk factor for adverse outcomes in older adults with heart failure. However, increasing complexity is often necessary when prescribing guideline-directed medical therapy at the time of a heart failure hospitalization. We sought to determine whether increased medication regimen complexity following a heart failure hospitalization was associated with worse post-hospitalization outcomes.

We present the complete genome sequence of Splendidofilaria pectoralis, a nematode parasite of grouse (Aves: Galliformes: Tetraonini). Illumina paired-end reads were assembled by a de novo method followed by a finishing step. The raw and assembled data are publicly available via GenBank: Sequence Read Archive (SRR28509439) and assembled genome (JBFSWT000000000).

The recent discovery that the trimeric SARS-CoV-2 spike S glycoprotein carries heme within an NTD domain pocket of the S1 subunits, suggested that this virus may be cleverly utilizing heme, in addition to the S1 RBD domains, for invading target cells carrying a specific entry receptor like ACE2, TMEM106B and others. Studies during the COVID-19 pandemic revealed that the infectivity of this virus depends on cell surface heparan sulfate and that the infection induces non-canonical activation of the Complement Alternative pathway (AP) on the surface of infected cells. In our recent COVID-19 genomic studies, among the coding SNPs of interest we also detected the presence of the CFH rs1061170, rs800292 and rs1065489 within all the infected patient subgroups examined.

Background: Facial recognition software (FRS) has historically been perceived as lacking the capability to identify individuals from cross-sectional medical images. Utilising such data for identification purposes was considered infeasible due to the substantial computational power and specialised technical expertise it would require. However, recent advancements in accessible artificial intelligence-based (AI-based) software and open-source tools have made these applications widely available and easy to use, raising new privacy concerns.

Background: Equitable access to vaccination remains a concern, particularly among population groups made structurally vulnerable. These population groups reflect the diversity of communities that are confronted with structural barriers caused by systemic racism and oppression and result in them experiencing suffer disadvantage and discrimination based on citizenship, race, ethnicity, ancestry, religion, spiritual beliefs, and/or gender identity. In Canada, Ontario public health units (PHUs) engage with faith-based organizations (FBOs) to improve vaccine confidence among populations made structurally vulnerable.
