Scattering experiments have revolutionized our understanding of nature. Examples include the discovery of the nucleus [R. G. Newton, (1982)], crystallography [U. Pietsch, V. Holý, T. Baumback, (2004)], and the discovery of the double-helix structure of DNA [J. D. Watson, F. H. C. Crick, 171, 737-738]. Scattering techniques differ by the type of particles used, the interaction these particles have with target materials, and the range of wavelengths used. Here, we demonstrate a two-dimensional table-top scattering platform for exploring magnetic properties of materials on mesoscopic length scales. Long-lived, coherent magnonic excitations are generated in a thin film of yttrium iron garnet and scattered off a magnetic target deposited on its surface. The scattered waves are then recorded using a scanning nitrogen vacancy center magnetometer that allows subwavelength imaging and operation under conditions ranging from cryogenic to ambient environment. While most scattering platforms measure only the intensity of the scattered waves, our imaging method allows for spatial determination of both amplitude and phase of the scattered waves, thereby allowing for a systematic reconstruction of the target scattering potential. Our experimental results are consistent with theoretical predictions for such a geometry and reveal several unusual features of the magnetic response of the target, including suppression near the target edges and a gradient in the direction perpendicular to the direction of surface wave propagation. Our results establish magnon scattering experiments as a platform for studying correlated many-body systems.

High-resolution Brillouin spectroscopy was employed to investigate the anisotropy in surface wave velocities within a bulk single crystal of SbTe, a well-known layered van der Waals material. By leveraging the bulk elastic constants derived from various simulation methods, we were able to theoretically calculate the distribution of surface acoustic phonon velocities on the cleavage plane of the material. Upon analyzing multiple simulation results, it became evident that the most significant discrepancies arose in the calculations of the elastic constant c, with values ranging from 48 to 98 GPa.

The complex dynamics of terahertz (THz) wave scattering by subwavelength-scale structures remain largely unexplored. This article examines the spectral scattering characteristics of subwavelength-sized spherical particles probed by tightly focused THz waves through numerical simulations and experimental techniques. The simulations reveal that the scattering intensity for lower Mie resonance modes (magnetic dipole and electric dipole modes) remains largely unaffected when THz waves are focused down to 0.

A new type of fully polarimetric retrodirective array (RDA) using a PON-type structure is proposed in this paper. The fully polarimetric property is the result of the proposed phase conjugation circuits, which perform phase conjugation processing on the x, y, and z polarization electric field components of the incident wave when combined with a tri-polarized antenna array. It enables the retrodirective array to receive and retransmit an arbitrary polarized incident wave.

Unveiling the nonlinear interactions between terahertz (THz) electromagnetic waves and free carriers in two-dimensional materials is crucial for the development of high-field and high-frequency electronic devices. Herein, we investigate THz nonlinear transport dynamics in a monolayer graphene/MoS heterostructure using time-resolved THz spectroscopy with intense THz pulses as the probe. Following ultrafast photoexcitation, the interfacial charge transfer establishes a nonequilibrium carrier redistribution, leaving free holes in the graphene and trapping electrons in the MoS.

Ultrasonic sensors based on backscattering principles have been developed for various applications involving arbitrary or random scatterer distributions. Although the theory of multiple scattering of waves is well-established, it has not been thoroughly explored in these applications. This work presents a feasible and simplified three-dimensional scattering model to predict the transient response generated by a set of rods positioned in the near field of a 1 MHz water-coupled ultrasonic transducer.
