AbstractWe explored a modified, computer-aided monitoring system for continuous, long-term recording of Bivalvia cardiac activity. To estimate the capabilities of this system, we used it to monitor the cardiac activity of a mussel () under predation threat from a starfish (). In addition, we used a web camera to track the behavioral responses of these animals. Compared to its state during normal feeding activity, the mussel's heart rate showed no significant changes when the mussel was near the starfish. However, when the mussel was attacked by the starfish, its heart rate and contraction power (, amplitude) increased and subsequently decreased down to the absence of any heartbeats within 2.5 hours. The results obtained in this study proved the usefulness of this new system as a stress-monitoring tool.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a serious medical condition that causes a failure in the right heart. Two-pore channel 2 (TPC2) is upregulated in PAH, but its roles in PAH remain largely unknown. Our investigation aims at the mechanisms by which TPC2 regulates PAH development.

Heart transplantation remains the ultimate treatment strategy for neonates and children with medically refractory end-stage heart failure and utilization of donors after circulatory death (DCD) can expand th donor pool. We have previously shown that mitochondrial transplantation preserves myocardial function and viability in neonatal swine DCD hearts to levels similar to that observed in donation after brain death (DBD). Herein, we sought to investigate the transcriptomic and proteomic pathways implicated in these phenotypic changes using ex situ perfused swine hearts.

Chronic heart failure (CHF) represents one of the most severe and advanced stages of cardiovascular disease. Despite the critical importance of cardiac rehabilitation (CR) in CHF management, while studies have explored the effectiveness of various CR delivery modes and offered valuable context-specific insights, their relative efficacy remains inconsistent across different patient groups, healthcare environments, and intervention approaches. A clearer understanding requires comprehensive comparisons and in-depth analyses to address these variations.

Toluene sulfonic acid remimazolam is a novel benzodiazepine that differs from traditional benzodiazepines (BZDs) due to its rapid onset, swift metabolism, and lack of hepatic or renal metabolism, as well as its reduced effects on cardiac and cerebral functions. Despite its potential advantages, clinical experience with this agent remains limited. This study investigated the effect of remizolam on postoperative delirium in elderly patients undergoing painless bronchoscopy.

Cardiac sex-difference functional studies have centred on measurements of twitch force and Ca dynamics. The energy expenditures from these two cellular processes: activation (Ca handling) and contraction (cross-bridge cycling), have not been assessed, and compared, between sexes. Whole-heart studies measuring oxygen consumption do not directly measure the energy expenditure of these activation-contraction processes.
