More than 500 centres in China hold over 300,000 individuals in what has been described by the United Nations as unethical and ineffective compulsory treatment and rehabilitation centres. Individuals in these centres face widespread human rights abuses, including lack of due process, forced labour, physical and sexual violence, and denial of healthcare. Because of the vulnerability of individuals in detention settings to abuse in research trials, ethical guidelines have required research to pose no more than minimal risk, to address the process of incarceration, and the health or well-being of detained individuals.

Background: A routine chest radiograph (CXR) is frequently incorporated into postoperative clinical pathways. Whereas prior studies evaluated CXR use for specific indications, overall CXR "stewardship" within cardiothoracic surgery remains undescribed. We characterized CXR use within a cardiothoracic intensive care unit (ICU) and quantified X-ray-driven changes in patient management.

We sought to identify rates of adherence to these new guidelines at an academic medical center.
Methods: Average-risk screening colonoscopies where 1 to 4 polyps <10 mm were removed between January 1, 2020, and June 30, 2021 were included.

Background: The use of telehealth has grown exponentially since the COVID-19 pandemic. The safety of an initial telehealth preoperative evaluation for patients undergoing general thoracic procedures is unknown.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed all patients who underwent a general thoracic surgical procedure at our academic tertiary care institution from January 2021 to December 2022.

Background: More than 1 million cardiac surgical procedures are estimated to occur yearly. Little is known about country-level procedural estimates and volumes needed to provide adequate population coverage. We evaluated annual cardiac procedural volumes for high-income countries and present target volumes for countries to work toward as part of universal health coverage agendas.
