Sarcasm is widely used, but its complexities are not well understood. Sarcastic utterances can have multiple nuanced meanings depending on individual differences of the speaker, listener, and the sociocultural context. The current study examined the views of 344 adults ages 31-55 in the United States, Mexico, and China. We used an online survey to ask participants to self-report how frequently they used sarcasm, under what circumstances, and for what reasons. They also completed the Hofstede Value Survey Module (HVSM) based on Hofstede's six dimensions of culture: Individualism/Collectivism, Power Distance, Uncertainty Avoidance, Masculinity/Femininity, Long Term Orientation, and Indulgence/Restraint. Respondents from the U.S. and Mexico, countries higher in Individualism and lower in Power Distance, reported more sarcasm use than respondents from China, a country higher in Power Distance and Collectivism. The most common reasons to use sarcasm in all three countries were "to be funny" and "to have fun with friends." (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2021 APA, all rights reserved).

This paper presents a coaxial integrated macro-micro composite actuator. The macro-actuator of the macro-micro composite actuator is similar to a moving coil type voice coil motor, and a giant magnetostrictive actuator is installed coaxially inside it as a micro-actuator. In this work, kinetic models are established for both the macro-actuator and micro-actuator, and based on the models, an automatic disturbance rejection controller is adopted to control the macro-actuator, and a fuzzy sliding mode controller is adopted for the micro-actuator.

The preference of water self-ions (hydronium and hydroxide) toward air/oil-water interfaces is one of the hottest topics in water research due to its importance for understanding properties, phenomena, and reactions of interfaces. In this work, we performed enhanced-sampling molecular dynamics simulations based on state-of-the-art neural network potentials with approximate M06-2X accuracy to investigate the propensity of hydronium and hydroxide ions at air/oil(decane)-water interfaces, which can simultaneously describe well the water autoionization process forming these ions, the recombination of ions, and the ionic distribution along the normal distance to the interface by employing a set of appropriate Voronoi collective variables. A stable ionic double-layer distribution is observed near the air-water interface, while the distribution is different at oil-water interfaces, where hydronium tends to be repelled from the interface into the bulk water, whereas hydroxide, with an interfacial stabilization free energy of -0.

This study assesses differences in median nerve position with or without palmaris longus (PL). We hypothesize that PL presence alters median nerve position, resulting in a greater distance to the skin volar surface, a decreased distance to the radius volar surface, and an increased distance to the flexor carpi radialis (FCR).

Fifth-generation (5G) communication technologies, such as millimeter wave communication, massive multiple-input-multiple-output and non-orthogonal-multiple-access (NOMA) are playing a pivotal role in promoting the modern applications of the Internet-of-Things. Using non-orthogonal resource allocation, NOMA can increase spectrum efficiency and achieve wide connectivity with low transmission delay and signaling cost. Despite the high potential of NOMA in 5G communications, NOMA is susceptible to a pilot contamination attack (PCA), in which an attacker resents the same pilot signals as authorized users.

Aggression is commonly associated with increased experiences of peer rejection and maladaptive social information processing biases throughout development. Little is known about the neural correlates of peer rejection that might underlie social information processing biases, and whether these neural correlates are common or different across early- and mid-adolescents on a continuum of aggression. Using the Cyberball task, we examined mediofrontal theta (4-7 Hz) event-related EEG spectral power during conditions of explicit and ambiguous social exclusion in 117 participants (57 early adolescents, ages 10-12 years, and 60 mid-adolescents, ages 14-16 years).
