Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 has had an indelible effect, with 153,738,171 cases recorded globally as per the World Health Organization's dashboard. The medical establishment is racing to find repurposed medications that can be successful against this novel coronavirus due to a shortage of new drugs to treat the disease. Favipiravir, an antiviral drug originally developed for influenza, is one of the drugs that has recently received a lot of attention, particularly in India. Here, we present a case of favipiravir-induced drug fever in a young adult coronavirus disease 2019 patient.

Teratogenicity and hyperuricaemia are the main side effects of favipiravir, an antiviral drug recently found its use to treat mild to moderate coronavirus (COVID-19) infections. This study investigated the beneficial effect of herbal extracts like (PK) and (SB) and their active chemical constituents (baicalin and baicalein) on favipiravir-induced hepatotoxicity in rats. The formulation combinations included favipiravir, favipiravir + PK extract, favipiravir + pure baicalin, favipiravir + pure baicalein, and favipiravir + SB extract designated as F1, F2, F3, F4 and F5 respectively that were administered to rats orally for 21 days.

Chronic human norovirus (HuNoV) infections in immunocompromised patients result in severe disease, yet approved antivirals are lacking. RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) inhibitors inducing viral mutagenesis display broad-spectrum in vitro antiviral activity, but clinical efficacy in HuNoV infections is anecdotal and the potential emergence of drug-resistant variants is concerning. Upon favipiravir (and nitazoxanide) treatment of four immunocompromised patients with life-threatening HuNoV infections, viral whole-genome sequencing showed accumulation of favipiravir-induced mutations which coincided with clinical improvement although treatment failed to clear HuNoV.
