Herein a regioselective addition/annulation strategy of ferrocenyl (Fc) thioamides with alkynes to construct thienylferrocene (ThienylFc) structures, involving a rhodium-catalyzed C-H activation, an unusual C2-selective addition of 1,3-diyne, and an unexpected intramolecular sulfur-transfer rearrangement process is described. In this protocol, thioamide not only serves as a directing group to activate the -C-H bond of the ferrocene, but also as a sulfur source to form the thiophene ring. The resulting carboxylic ester group after sulfur transfer can act as a linkage to construct extended π-conjugated ferrocenes (OCTFc) with luminescent properties. ThienylFc displays effective fluorescence quenching due to the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) from the Fc unit to the excited luminophore, which turns out to be a promising type of redox molecular switch. OCTFc exhibit relatively strong emission owing to their intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) characteristics. The ring-fused strategy is herein employed for the first time to construct luminescent materials based on ferrocenes, which provides inspiration for the development of novel organic optoelectronic materials, such as electroluminescent materials based on ferrocenes.

Presented herein is a novel synthesis of CF-substituted pyrrolo[1,2-]indole derivatives based on the cascade reactions of -alkoxycarbamoyl indoles with CF-ynones. Mechanistically, the formation of a product involves a tandem process initiated by Rh(III)-catalyzed and -alkoxycarbamoyl group-directed regioselective C2-H alkenylation of the indole scaffold followed by in situ removal of the directing group and intramolecular -nucleophilic addition/annulation under one set of reaction conditions. To our knowledge, this is the first example in which a -alkoxycarbamoyl unit initially acts as a directing group for C2-H functionalization of the indole scaffold and is then removed to provide the required reactive -moiety for subsequent intramolecular condensation.

A novel chiral phosphoric acid-catalyzed tandem regioselective 1,6-addition/double intramolecular nucleophilic addition annulation of the propargylic 3-methyleneindoles in situ generated from α-indolyl propargylic alcohols with 2-indolylmethanols has been developed. The methodology afforded the new chiral trifluoromethyl pentalenobisindoles bearing an all-carbon quaternary stereogenic center in generally good yields with excellent enantioselectivities.

-Alkynyl quinone methides are well-known four-atom synthons for direct [4 + ] cycloaddition in constructing useful oxa-heterocyclic compounds owing to their high reactivity as well as the thermodynamically favored aromatization nature of this process. Herein we report an operationally simple and eco-friendly protocol for the modular and regioselective access of ()-4-(vinyl or aryl or alkynyl)iminochromenes from propargylamines and -methylated β-ketothioamides in the presence of FeCl, and particularly under undried acetonitrile and air atmosphere conditions. This method exhibits a broad substrate scope and displays nice functional group compatibility, thus providing an efficient access of 3,4-disubstituted iminochromenes.

We describe here a Cu-catalyzed and 4-OH-TEMPO-mediated sequential dehydrogenation/aza-Michael addition/annulation cascade reaction for the construction of -alkyl 2-arylindoles from facilely available saturated ketones and 2-arylethynylanilines. This reaction shows high regioselectivity and tolerates a variety of functional groups. Moreover, 3-alkyl-substituted indoles can also be achieved when using 2-alkylethynylanilines as starting materials.
