Saudi Arabia has no permanent lakes or rivers but has wet meadows, which are desert wetlands temporarily formed due to the seasonal rainfall. This work investigates the environmental variables' impact on the vegetation pattern in the desert-wetland ecosystem in Taif highlands. Forty-one stands were randomly selected representing three main habitats (wet meadows, slopes, and terraces) to study their floristic features and vegetation analysis. A total of 142 species were recorded belonging to 111 genera and 45 families in the desert wetlands of Taif Province. About 64.1% were natural plants, while 25.4% were segetal weeds, 7.7% were aquatic plants, and 2.8% were plants that escaped from cultivation. Therophytes dominated over the other life forms, and mono-regional taxa were the dominant chorotype. Multivariate analysis of the recorded plants produced eight vegetation groups; four of them (A: , B: , C: and D: ) represented the wet meadows, while two (E: and H: for slopes and other two (F: and G: ) for the desert terraces. The vegetation zonation was clear, which started from real aquatic species in the wet meadows passing through mixed vegetation in the slopes and ended with proper xerophytic vegetation in the terraces. community had the highest species diversity, while that of had the lowest. The principal component analysis indicated that HCO, NO, Mg, Cl, Ca, and pH values were the most effective soil variable. The presence of several segetal weeds suggests the alteration of the natural status of the desert-wetland ecosystem, and thus the conservation of these natural habitats becomes urgent.

Application of biogas slurry (BS) can promote ammonia (NH) volatilization. Algae sludge and Quercus acutissima leaves are rich in resources and nutrients, and can be effectively converted into valuable products. Hydrothermal carbonization technology (HTC) is a sustainable method for the treatment of wet biomass.

Soil bacterial communities are critical for maintaining ecosystem functions, yet the impact of water level fluctuations on ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF) and the role of bacterial communities in the lake water-level-fluctuating zone (WLFZ) remain poorly understood. This study investigated how seasonal water level fluctuations influence EMF and their relationships with soil bacterial communities through a two-year field survey. We found that soil bacterial diversity was significantly positively correlated with EMF.

Alpine wet meadows are known as NO sinks due to nitrogen (N) limitation. However, phosphate addition and N deposition can modulate this limitation, and little is known about their combinative effects on NO emission from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in wet meadows. This study used natural wet meadow as the control treatment (CK) and conducted experiments with N (CONH addition, N15), P (NaHPO addition, P15), and their combinations (CONH and NaHPO addition, N15P15) to investigate how N and P supplementation affected soil NO emissions in wet meadow of QTP.

Soil nitrogen (N) transformation is an essential portion of the N cycle in wetland ecosystems, governing the retention status of soil N by controlling the effective soil N content. N deposition produced by human activities changes the physical characteristics of soil, affecting N fractions and enzyme activities. To characterize these influences, three different N addition levels (N5, 5 g/m; N10, 10 g/m; N15, 15 g/m) were established using a wet meadow on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) as a control treatment (0 g/m).

Pesticide contamination in the river basins is closely associated with land covers. However, the impact of land covers on the pesticide contamination remains unclear. In this study, concentrations of 14 pesticides (10 insecticides, 3 fungicides, and 1 herbicide) in water were investigated along a major tributary of the Pearl River in wet and dry seasons in 2023.
