Published: July 2022

Background: Leptin plays an important role in the regulation of the immune response. There is a physiological surge of leptin in rodents during the neonatal period, which has mainly been studied in the context of brain development. However, little is known about the effects of this neonatal leptin surge on immunity. Therefore, we investigated whether blocking this leptin surge could affect several immune functions.

Methods: Male and female rats were injected subcutaneously with 5 mg/Kg/day of rat pegylated super leptin antagonist during the neonatal period (PND5-9). On the peripubertal period, relevant functions as well as cytokine release by spleen leukocytes were studied in these animals.

Results: The results showed that the animals significantly display an impaired anti-tumor NK activity and chemotactic and proliferation capacity of lymphocytes in response to mitogens. In addition, several cytokine concentrations, released under mitogen-stimulated conditions, were also altered.

Conclusion: In conclusion, the neonatal leptin surge seems to be involved in the establishment of an adequate immune response and cytokine profile, which are crucial for the maintenance of a healthy life.

High neonatal growth hormone (GH) secretion has been described in several species. However, the neuroendocrine mechanisms behind this surge remain unknown. Thus, the pattern of postnatal GH secretion was investigated in mice and rats.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how a temporary increase in leptin levels after birth, known as leptin surge, may influence future obesity risk in mice, particularly those genetically prone or resistant to obesity.
  • The research specifically examines the sources of leptin during this surge and how factors like sex and genetics affect its role in weight gain when placed on different diets.
  • Findings reveal that leptin levels at 2 weeks old can predict adult body weight and fat levels, highlighting the importance of early leptin exposure in determining obesity outcomes later in life.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the role of intestinal gluconeogenesis (IGN) in regulating energy balance and the development of feeding circuits in the hypothalamus, particularly during the neonatal period.
  • Researchers induced IGN in newborn mice by overexpressing the enzyme G6pc1 and studied the impact on hypothalamic feeding circuit development and sympathetic innervation of adipose tissues.
  • Results showed that inducing IGN at birth led to changes in key hypothalamic circuits and better protection against metabolic issues from a high-fat diet, while later induction had no effect on these parameters.

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) presents impediment to wound healing. While ultraviolet B (UVB) exposure showed therapeutic potential in various skin conditions, its capacity to mediate diabetic wound healing remains unclear. To investigate the efficacy of UVB on wound healing and its underlying basis.

Timed feeding drives adipose browning, although the integrative mechanisms for the same remain unclear. Here, we show that twice-a-night (TAN) feeding generates biphasic oscillations of circulating insulin and leptin, representing their entrainment by timed feeding. Insulin and leptin surges lead to marked cellular, functional, and metabolic remodeling of subcutaneous white adipose tissue (sWAT), resulting in increased energy expenditure.
