Objective: Two consecutive studies sought to determine the (1) Equivalent Threshold Sound Pressure Levels (ETSPLs) and, (2) real ear attenuation thresholds (REAT) for the KUDUwave earcup configured with an insert earphone using a typical immittance probe tip (TPT).

Design: (1) Hearing thresholds were measured for frequencies 125 to 8000 Hz using the TPT. ETSPLs were calculated in an IEC 60318-4 occluded ear simulator. (2) REAT were obtained by measuring sound field thresholds with ears uncovered and covered with the investigational transducer. The attenuation values were used to determine the maximum permissible ambient noise levels (MPANLs).

Study Sample: (1) Study 1 included twenty-five adult participants with no otologic diseases (8 females; 18 - 33 years). (2) Study 2 included fifteen normal hearing participants aged 21-31 years.

Results: Established ETSPLs, REAT, and MPANLs for the TPT are presented in this paper. The determined TPT ETSPLs differed from the ER-3A foam tip insert earphone's RETSPLs reported in ISO 389-2.

Conclusions: The investigational transducer can be used for pure-tone audiometry provided the reported MPANLs are adhered to, and ETSPL values are employed for calibration purposes. The advantage is to achieve a cost-effective one-probe tip solution for pure tone audiometry and immittance measurement.

Objective: To investigate the relationship between a history of otitis media (OM) in early childhood and speech reception thresholds (SRT) in later childhood, using the Dutch digits-in-noise (DIN) test at ages 9 and 13 years.

Methods: This study was conducted within the Generation R study, a prospective birth cohort in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Children underwent pure-tone audiometry and DIN testing at ages 9 (2011-2015) and 13 (2016-2020) years.

Introduction: In the course of middle ear diseases, a disturbed influence of the system transmitting sound through the middle ear on the function of the inner ear is observed. The audiometric consequence of the disease process taking place in the middle ear is the shift in bone conduction (BC) thresholds, which is called pseudoperceptive hearing loss (the so-called Carhart effect). The natural process of aging of the hearing system (age-related hearing loss) means that the manifestation of the Carhart effect varies in different age groups.

Introduction: The exposure to unsafe sound levels is considered a risk factor for developing noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). Personal listening devices (PLDs) represent a common source of recreational noise among young adults. First changes of NIHL could be detected at extended high frequencies (EHFs).

Target an arbitrary probability of response using weighted staircase procedures.

Threshold estimation procedures are widely used to measure the stimulus level corresponding to a specified probability of response. The weighted up-and-down procedure, familiar to many due to its use in standard pure-tone audiometry, allows the experimenter to target any probability of response by using different ascending and descending step sizes. Unfortunately, thresholds have a signed mean error that made using weighted staircases inadvisable.

Revisiting Age-Related Normative Hearing Levels in Korea.

J Korean Med Sci

January 2025

Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, College of Medicine, Hanyang University, Seoul, Korea.

Background: Hearing level reference values based on the results of recent audiometry have not been established for the general population of South Korea. This study aimed to evaluate the mean hearing levels of each age group and to measure the annual progression of hearing loss.

Methods: We used the database of the eighth and ninth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2020 to 2022, and included participants with normal tympanic membranes and without occupational noise exposure.
