Orthodontic retention remains one of the great challenges in orthodontics. In this article, we discuss what is on the horizon to help address this challenge, including biological approaches to reduce relapse, treating patients without using retainers, technological developments, personalised medicine and the impact of COVID-19 on approaches to orthodontic retention.

Introduction: It is known that the stability of the results obtained with orthodontic treatment depends, in addition to the functional and aesthetic aspects, also on the adequate planning of the retention devices, the patient's compliance with this new phase, and the physiological changes that the human body experiences over the years, throughout the craniofacial aging process.
Objective: This article discusses the importance of the orthodontic retention phase and the influence of diagnosis, planning and execution of corrective treatment of malocclusions, in order to achieve the expected success.
Methods: Throughout the text, different types of retainers and approaches during this phase will be presented, with the aim of ensuring the stability of the results obtained after correcting problems in the vertical, transverse and anteroposterior directions.
Objective: To investigate young people's experience of retainer wear in the immediate term and at 6 months after appliance removal, and to explore the factors affecting retainer wear adherence.
Design: Qualitative study.
Setting: Orthodontic departments at two teaching hospitals in Yorkshire, UK.
Objectives: To evaluate the effect of orthodontic movement on traumatized teeth treated with the regenerative endodontic procedure (REP).
Materials And Methods: The increase of the radiographic root area (RRA) of each REP tooth was measured at each follow-up visit after the end of orthodontic treatment. The study included two experimental groups of patients aged 7-17 with REP-treated teeth.
Proper alignment of the teeth not only aids in functional occlusion but also promotes harmonious gingival contours, potentially reducing the risk of inflammation and gingival recession. This case series aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of optimizing axial inclination through clear aligner orthodontic treatment in addressing gingival recession defects. This case series included nine patients, aged 20-36 years, who presented with varying degrees of gingival recession on 12 mandibular incisors.

Aim: To evaluate risk indicators for gingival recessions (GRs) in the lower anterior teeth of orthodontic patients post treatment and during a retention period of at least 5 years, compared to non-treated controls.
Material And Methods: Eighty-nine orthodontically treated patients who were recession-free before treatment were recruited. Demographic, cephalometric and occlusal records were retrieved before (T1) and after treatment (T2), and periodontal outcomes were clinically evaluated at least 5 years post retention (T3).
