Hematite (α-FeO) exerts a strong control over the transport of minor but critical metals in the environment and is used in multiple industrial applications; the photocatalysis community has explored the properties of hematite nanoparticles over a wide range of transition metal dopants. Nonetheless, simplistic assumptions are used to rationalize the local coordination environment of impurities in hematite. Here, we use ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD)-guided structural analysis to model the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) of Cu- and Zn-doped hematite nanoparticles. Specific defect-impurity associations were identified, and the local coordination environments of Cu and Zn both displayed considerable configurational disorder that, in aggregate, approached Jahn-Teller-like distortion for Cu but, in contrast, maintained hematite-like symmetry for Zn. This study highlights the role of defects in accommodating impurities in a nominally low-entropy phase and the limits to traditional shell-by-shell fitting of EXAFS for dopants/impurities in unprecedented bonding environments.

Ferritin nanocarriers, which can penetrate the blood-brain barrier (BBB), have gained significant research interest for the diagnosis and treatment of central nervous system (CNS) diseases, including gliomas, Alzheimer's disease, and brain metastases. In recent years, ferritin has been proved as a candidate to cross the BBB using receptor-mediated transcytosis (RMT) mechanism through transferrin receptor 1 (TfR1) which is overexpressed in the cells of the BBB. Background: Although conventional pre-operative venography can accurately delineate venous anatomy as an alternative to ultrasound for hemodialysis access planning, it may carry a risk of contrast-induced acute kidney injury (AKI) and progression of renal failure in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients not yet on dialysis. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of pre-operative venograms in pre-end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) patients.
Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study (2018-2022) of consecutive pre-ESKD patients who underwent staged bilateral venograms for preoperative vein mapping prior to hemodialysis access creation at a tertiary care medical center.
