Medicine Meets Science: The Imperative of Scientific Research and Publishing for Physician-Scientists.

Indian J Radiol Imaging

January 2025

Department of Neurology, Division of Cerebrovascular Medicine and Neurology, National Cerebral and Cardiovascular Center (NCVC), Suita, Osaka, Japan.

Physician-scientists serve as conduits between clinical practice and scientific research, leveraging their unique expertise to improve patient care and drive medical innovation. This article highlights the indispensable role of research and publishing in promoting evidence-based practices, facilitating professional growth, and shaping public health policy. Drawing on historical and contemporary examples, I examine the challenges faced by physician-scientists, such as ethical dilemmas and declining engagement in research, particularly in resource-constrained settings.

Neuroprotective Effects of Eugenol Acetate Against Ischemic Stroke.

J Inflamm Res

January 2025

Department of Neurology, Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital, Clinical College of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, Nanjing, 210008, People's Republic of China.

Objective: To explore the neuroprotective effect of Eugenol Acetate (EA) on post-stroke neuroinflammation and investigate the underlying mechanisms.

Methods: For in vitro experiments, primary microglia were pre-incubated with EA for 2 hours, followed by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation for 24 hours or Oxygen-Glucose Deprivation (OGD) treatment for 4 hours. Real-time quantitative PCR, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and Western blot were performed to examine the expression levels of inflammatory cytokines in primary microglia.

We examined the effect of aging and cortical stroke on the rate of motor adaptation (adaptation rate) and amount of performance gains (adaptation plateau) in balance skills. Fourteen older (≥60 years) and fifteen younger (<60 years) adults with chronic stroke, and thirteen healthy older adults (≥60 years) participated. Participants experienced 8 consecutive gait-slips (≤45 cm) to their non-paretic/dominant limb.

Objectives: Significant associations between pregnancy loss and risk of future maternal cardiovascular disease (CVD) have been found in Western countries, but the association in China is still unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the associations of pregnancy loss, number of pregnancy losses, subtype of pregnancy loss (i.e.

Impaired semantic control in the logopenic variant of primary progressive aphasia.

Brain Commun

December 2024

Medical Research Council (MRC) Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit, University of Cambridge, Cambridge CB2 7EF, UK.

We investigated semantic cognition in the logopenic variant of primary progressive aphasia, including (i) the status of verbal and non-verbal semantic performance; and (ii) whether the semantic deficit reflects impaired semantic control. Our hypothesis that individuals with logopenic variant of primary progressive aphasia would exhibit semantic control impairments was motivated by the anatomical overlap between the temporoparietal atrophy typically associated with logopenic variant of primary progressive aphasia and lesions associated with post-stroke semantic aphasia and Wernicke's aphasia, which cause heteromodal semantic control impairments. We addressed the presence, type (semantic representation and semantic control; verbal and non-verbal), and progression of semantic deficits in logopenic variant of primary progressive aphasia.
