This study characterized the mechanisms of carbapenem resistance in gram-negative bacteria isolated from patients in Yola, Nigeria. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) was performed on 66 isolates previously identified phenotypically as carbapenem-non-susceptible. The patterns of beta-lactamase resistance genes identified were primarily species-specific. However, bla and bla were detected in all Escherichia coli and most Providencia rettgeri isolates; bla was also detected in 1 Enterobacter cloacae. The E. coli and E. cloacae isolates also shared bla while bla was found in all P. rettgeri, one Pseudomonas aeruginosa and 1 E. coli. Except for Stenotrophomonas maltophilia isolates, which only contained bla, most species carried multiple beta-lactamase genes, including those encoding extended-spectrum beta-lactamases, AmpC and OXA in addition to a carbapenemase gene. Carbapenemase genes were either class B or class D beta-lactamases. No carbapenemase gene was detected by WGS in 13.6% of isolates.

Background: Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is already being adopted for the surveillance of health conditions of communities and shows great potential for the monitoring of infectious pathogens of public health importance. There is however paucity of robust data to support extensive WBE in Nigeria. This study evaluated the prevalence of clinically relevant infectious pathogens and provided antimicrobial resistance profiles of bacteria pathogens in wastewater canals in Lagos State at a single point in time.

Sesame cultivation was until recently restricted to the northwestern part of Benin. The yield is relatively low, as there are no improved varieties introduced and widely adopted so far. This study aimed to assess the molecular diversity, genetic differentiation, and the agronomic performance of a collection of local cultivars and introduced lines of sesame from China.

Background: ABO and Rh blood group systems are the most significant blood group systems recognized by the International Society of Blood Transfusion and are widely used for clinical and anthropological purposes. This systematic review determined the distribution and allelic frequency of ABO and Rh(D) antigens in Ghana.
Methods: Literature searches were performed in PubMed, Google Scholar, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect, up to February 20, 2024, and included studies published from 2000 to 2024 in all regions of Ghana.

Essential genes are those whose presence is vital for a cell's survival and growth. Detecting these genes in disease-causing organisms is critical for various biological studies, including understanding microbe metabolism, engineering genetically modified microorganisms, and identifying targets for treatment. When essential genes are expressed, they give rise to essential proteins.

This study is aimed at determining the prevalence of oral HPV infection and the risk indicators for oral HPV carriage in people living with HIV. Data on socio-demographics, sexual behavioral practices, and lifestyle practices of the participants were collected from 66 people living with HIV. The HIV parameters of each study participant were obtained from clinical records.
