An amphiphilic calix[6]arene, alone or complexed with an axle to form a pseudo-rotaxane, has been embedded into liposomes prepared from 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (POPC) and the permeability of the membrane-doped liposomes towards Cl ions has been evaluated by using lucigenin as the fluorescent probe. The pseudo-rotaxane promotes transmembrane transport of Cl ions more than calix[6]arene does. Surprisingly, the quenching of lucigenin was very fast for liposomes doped with the positively charged axle alone. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and quantum-chemical calculations were also carried out for providing a semi-quantitative support to the experimental results.

The present study developed an efficient fluorescent approach, based on a supramolecular assembly between gold nanoclusters and calix[4]arene derivatives (C4A-Ds), to detect sever pollutant of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS). For that, a series of C4A-Ds with different chain lengths and positive charges at the wider rim were designed and synthesized. Cytidine-5' phosphate protected gold nanoclusters (AuNCs@CMP) were then assembled with calix[4]arene (LC4AP) to form AuNCs/LC4AP assembly, leading to 8-fold luminescence enhancement via the AIEE effect.

Artificial supramolecular light-harvesting systems have expanded various properties on photoluminescence, enabling promising applications on cell imaging, especially for imaging in organelles. Supramolecular light-harvesting systems have been used for imaging in some organelles such as lysosome, Golgi apparatus, and mitochondrion, but developing a supramolecular light-harvesting platform for imaging two organelles synchronously still remains a great challenge. Here, we report a series of lower-rim dodecyl-modified sulfonato-calix[4]arene-mediated supramolecular light-harvesting platforms for efficient light-harvesting from three naphthalene diphenylvinylpyridiniums containing acceptors, Nile Red, and Nile Blue.

Artificial receptors able to recognize efficiently chemical species bearing a quaternary ammonium group have potential applications in the fields of biological and environmental analyses. A possible biomimetic strategy for the elaboration of such receptors consists of associating in close proximity a polyaromatic cavity with a polar binding site. Herein, we show that bis-calix[6]arene 1 behaves as a heteroditopic receptor that can bind biologically relevant quaternary ammonium ions and zwitterions.

A series of novel calixarene-based tubes comprising different numbers of silatrane anchoring groups was synthesized. For the first time, a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) derived from calixtubes was formed on a SiO surface. The formation of the SAM was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray analysis, and contact angle measurements.
