Pancreatic cancer detection and characterization: state of the art and radiomics.

Published: May 2021

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) represents a challenge for a multidisciplinary oncology team. Diagnosis of PDAC remains challenging due to overlapping imaging features with benign lesions, notwithstanding great advances with computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The term "Radiomics" has recently been introduced to define a mathematical process to extract countless quantitative features from medical images (including each diagnostic technique) with high throughput computing for diagnosis and prediction. This article is an updated overview of the imaging techniques to be employed during detection and characterization of pancreatic cancer diagnostic workup. Particularly, the limitations and advantages of the different imaging techniques are discussed, with a particular focus on functional imaging. This overview is the result of a self-study without protocol and registration number. Articles published in the English language from January 2000 to January 2021 were included. We analyzed 15 papers on radiomics. The possibility of functional imaging, such as CT, MRI, and radiomics has revolutionized pancreatic imaging, improving the detection and characterization of the lesions and allowing a prognosis related to radiological features, favoring the process of personalized medicine.

African swine fever (ASF) is a highly contagious disease affecting wild and domestic pigs, characterised by severe haemorrhagic symptoms and high mortality rates. Originally confined to Sub-Saharan Africa, ASF virus genotype II has spread to Europe since 2014, mainly affecting Eastern Europe, and progressing through wild boar migrations and human action. In January 2022, the first case of ASF, due to genotype II, was reported in North-western Italy, in a wild boar carcass.

Cardiac MRI in Heart Transplantation: Approaches and Clinical Insights.

Radiographics

From the Department of Radiology (S.Q., R.C., J.C.C., M.M., B.D.A., R.A.) and the Division of Cardiology, Department of Medicine (V.A., J.E.W., R.L.W., D.C.L.), Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, 737 N Michigan Ave, Ste 1600, Chicago, IL 60611; Prince Charles Hospital, Chermside, Queensland, Australia (V.A.); and the Department of Biomedical Engineering, McCormick School of Engineering, Northwestern University, Chicago, Ill (M.M.).

Orthotopic heart transplant (OHT) is a well-established therapy for end-stage heart failure that leads to improved long-term survival rates, with careful allograft surveillance essential for optimizing clinical outcomes after OHT. Unfortunately, complications can arise after OHT that can compromise the success of the OHT. Cardiac MRI is continually evolving, with a range of advanced techniques that can be applied to evaluate allograft structure and function.

Genomic data on from the African continent are currently lacking, resulting in the region being under-represented in global analyses of infection (CDI) epidemiology. For the first time in Nigeria, we utilized whole-genome sequencing and phylogenetic tools to compare isolates from diarrhoeic human patients (=142), livestock (=38), poultry manure (=5) and dogs (=9) in the same geographic area (Makurdi, north-central Nigeria) and relate them to the global population. In addition, selected isolates were tested for antimicrobial susceptibility (=33) and characterized by PCR ribotyping (=53).

Proximity-Induced Superconductivity in Ferromagnetic FeGeTe and Josephson Tunneling through a van der Waals Heterojunction.

Synergy between superconductivity and ferromagnetism may offer great opportunities in nondissipative spintronics and topological quantum computing. Yet at the microscopic level, the exchange splitting of the electronic states responsible for ferromagnetism is inherently incompatible with the spin-singlet nature of conventional superconducting Cooper pairs. Here, we exploit the recently discovered van der Waals ferromagnets as enabling platforms with marvelous controllability to unravel the myth between ferromagnetism and superconductivity.

Genetic diversity and selection signatures in sheep breeds.

J Appl Genet

January 2025

Departamento de Ciências Exatas, Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP), Faculdade de Ciências Agrárias e Veterinárias, Jaboticabal, Brazil.

Natural and artificial selection in domesticated animals can cause specific changes in genomic regions known as selection signatures. Our study used the integrated haplotype score (iHS) and Tajima's D tests within non-overlapping windows of 100 kb to identify selection signatures, in addition to genetic diversity and linkage disequilibrium estimates in 9498 sheep from breeds in Ireland (Belclare, Charollais, Suffolk, Texel, and Vendeen). The mean observed and expected heterozygosity for all the sheep breeds were 0.
