A rare case of Seymour fracture in an adult with non-fused growth plates.

Plastic Surgery, The Royal London Hospital, London, UK.

Published: May 2021

The mechanism for growth plate fusion is not fully understood yet. We present the first reported Seymour fracture (Salter Harris I) in an adult with failed growth plate fusion. The management of Seymour fractures should be according to radiological bone age rather than actual age.

Article Synopsis
  • Microadditive manufacturing enables the creation of intricate nano- and microscale components, leading to advancements in various industries.
  • This research explores two-photon and three-photon fluorescence imaging, along with third-harmonic generation microscopy, to analyze complex lattice structures produced by multiphoton lithography.
  • The study reveals that multiphoton fluorescence imaging provides better depth penetration and nondestructive identification of internal modifications and defects, improving quality control in microadditively manufactured products.

Introduction: The optimal management of patients taking DOAC medications in the perioperative trauma setting is based on limited evidence. Current guidelines recommend withholding DOAC medications 48-72 hours pre-operatively. The objective of this trial was to determine the utility of measuring DOAC levels prior to surgery, evaluate the safety of a cut-off level of <50 ng/mL and to compare the outcomes with time parameters.

Article Synopsis
  • Evidence-based guidelines suggest that all older adults with hip fractures should receive oral nutrition supplements (ONS), but this study found that only 47.3% of hospitalized patients received them.
  • The research involved 385 older adults aged 65 and older from 29 hospitals across two countries, highlighting that ONS was more commonly given to those identified as malnourished and those lacking preoperative assessments.
  • The study concludes that a more structured approach is needed to ensure that all older adults, regardless of cognitive or nutritional status, receive ONS to improve recovery outcomes after hip fractures.

Rapid-onset cerebral fat embolism syndrome leading to brain death: A case report.

Trauma Case Rep

December 2024

Hartford Healthcare Medical Group, 85 Seymour Street, Suite 415, Hartford, CT 06102, USA.

Background: Fat Embolism Syndrome (FES) is a rare clinical phenomenon attributed to fat droplet embolization and subsequent multisystem organ failure, typically following traumatic orthopedic injury. It classically presents with hypoxemia, transient neurologic deficits, and skin changes that appear a day or more after the initial insult. Its exact mechanism remains unclear, although the mechanical obstruction of capillaries or production of toxic intermediaries following fat hydrolysis and extravasation of marrow have been described.
