Objective: The objective was to establish a machine learning-based model for predicting the occurrence and mortality of nonpulmonary sepsis-associated ARDS.

Methods: 80% of sepsis patients selected randomly from the MIMIC-IV database, without prior pulmonary conditions and with nonpulmonary infection sites, were used to construct prediction models through machine learning techniques (including K-nearest neighbour, extreme gradient boosting, support vector machine, deep neural network, and decision tree methods). The remaining 20% of patients were utilized to validate the model's accuracy.

Article Synopsis
  • Predicting survival rates of discarded aquatic animals using vitality indicators is more resource-efficient than captive observation, but these indicators can be inaccurate.
  • A new analytical method was developed to optimize predictions for the discard survival of European plaice, taking into account the varying impacts of specific reflexes and injuries.
  • In testing various vitality indicators, all were found to perform poorly in predicting survival rates without considering factors like air exposure and seawater temperature, highlighting the need for better predictive measures.

Understanding the demography of wildlife populations is a key component for ecological research, and where necessary, supporting the conservation and management of long-lived animals. However, many animals lack phenological changes with which to determine individual age; therefore, gathering this fundamental information presents difficulties. More so for species that are rare, highly mobile, migratory and those that reside in inaccessible habitats.
