We have compared the therapeutic effectiveness of a new UVB fluorescent sunlamp, the Philips TL-01 lamp, which emits a narrow peak around 311-312 nm, with the currently used Philips TL-12 lamp, in 10 patients with psoriasis. We also compared the tumour inducing capacity of the two lamps in hairless mice. The therapeutic effect of the TL-01 lamp was superior to that of the TL-12 lamp in nine of the 10 patients. In the mice, the median tumour induction time was significantly longer in animals exposed to the TL-01 lamp. Phototherapy with the new type of lamp requires a higher dose than phototherapy with the usual broadband UVB sources. In practice this means that more lamps are needed in the light cabinet. However, the new lamps appear to provide more effective and safer phototherapy for psoriasis.

Vitiligo is an acquired disorder of skin pigmentation that produces significant psychological impact especially in those with skin of color. Narrow-band ultraviolet B (NB-UVB) therapy, which was first used in vitiligo in 1997 by Westerhof and Nieuweboer-Krobotova, has emerged as one of the safest and most effective therapy for this dermatosis. The light source used for NB-UVB phototherapy is the TL-01 lamp, and the most common model of the NB-UVB phototherapy device is the upright in-office booth or chamber which has 24-48 such lamps.

Statistical analysis of the daily course of exposures to TL-01 tube radiation for 93 psoriatic patients from the Medical University of Łódź during 20-day phototherapy shows that the dose of 1 J/cm(2) represents a unit of single exposure necessary for psoriasis healing. This value is converted to the antipsoriatic effective dose of 317.9 J/m(2) using the TL-01 lamp irradiance spectrum and the antipsoriatic action spectrum.

Ultraviolet B phototherapy is a common treatment for psoriasis. It was determined that wavelengths between 305 and 315 nm have the best therapeutic effect. The aim of this study was the evaluation of efficacy of narrow spectrum (311 nm) phototherapy in the treatment of psoriatic onychia.
