A novel symmetric bianthracene derivative (D2) containing one benzene ring and two ethyl thioglycolates connecting to the benzene ring on both sides of the bianthracene unit was designed and synthesized. D2 can detect Fe and Hg in acetonitrile/water (6:4, v/v) solution via different changes of absorbance and fluorescence in the pH range from 3 to 10. D2 exhibits high colorimetric sensitivity for Fe with low detection limit (1.87 × 10 mol/L). The absorbance intensity of D2 in acetonitrile/water solution show a linear response to Fe in the wide concentration range of 0 -1000 μM, which is beneficial for quantitative analysis. D2 also displays highly selective fluorescent sensing for Hg with a low detection limit of 1.07 µM over other metal ions and can accurately detect the existence of Hg in water samples.

Precise sub-Ångstrom-level porosity engineering, which is appealing in gas separations, has been demonstrated in solid carbon, polymer, and framework materials but rarely achieved in the liquid phase. In this work, a gas molecular sieving effect in the liquid phase at sub-5 Ångstrom scale is created via sophisticated porosity tuning in calixarene-derived porous liquids (PLs). Type II PLs are constructed via supramolecular complexation between the sodium salts of calixarene derivatives and crown ether solvents.

Control of individual spins at the atomic level holds great promise for miniaturized spintronics, quantum sensing, and quantum information processing. Both single atomic and molecular spin centers are prime candidates for these applications and are often individually addressed and manipulated using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). In this work, we present a hybrid approach and demonstrate a robust method for self-assembly of magnetic organometallic complexes consisting of individual iron (Fe) atoms and molecules on a silver substrate using STM.

The adjustment of the electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of polymeric carbon nitride (CN) is essential for its application in sensitive immunoassays. However, such modification through aggregation-induced emission (AIE) has not yet been reported. Herein, aggregation-induced ECL in CN oligomer (CNO) was induced through the introduction of a rotatable imine moiety, with the resulting material exhibiting excellent performance in the targeted immunodetection of neuron-specific enolase.

The accurate and sensitive quantification of hydroxyl radical (·OH) and glucose is necessary for disease diagnosis and health guidance, but still challenging owing to the low concentration of ·OH and poor water solubility of fluorescent probes. In addition, fluorescent probes may cause secondary pollution to the environment. Here an organic cage was reported as a sensitive fluorescent probe for ·OH and glucose in aqueous solution without serious secondary pollution.

We have calculated the magnetically induced current density (MICD) susceptibility at the all-electron density functional theory level for a series of coronoid molecules of increasing size and compared the MICD susceptibilities with those calculated using the pseudo-π (PP) model. The molecules sustain global diatropic magnetically induced ring currents (MIRCs), whereas paratropic MICD vortices mainly appear inside the benzene rings. The computationally cheaper PP calculations were also employed on circum[]coronene molecules showing that the MICD pattern continues to alternate for odd and even when increasing the size of the molecule.
