Objectives: To summarize the long-term results of patients with urachal carcinoma treated in our center.

Clinical Cases: The mean age at diagnosis was 48 years. The tumor stage according to Sheldon´s staging was IIB in two, IVA in one and IVB in two cases. Two of the patients underwent radical cystectomy and three underwent a partial one. All of them were urachal carcinomas, three were mucinous, one enteric and the fifth unspecified. All the patients received chemotherapy treatment. The mean follow-up time was 32 months, until death caused by the disease in all five cases.

Conclusions: Despite recent reviews, treatment remains a medical challenge. The importance of surgery is clear, but it is necessary to continue investigate different added treatments.

D-loop mutations in mitochondrial DNA are a risk factor for chemotherapy resistance in esophageal cancer.

Sci Rep

December 2024

Department of Gastroenterological Surgery, Graduate School of Medicine, Osaka University, 2-2-E2, Yamada-Oka, Suita, Osaka, 565-0871, Japan.

Esophageal cancer is a highly aggressive disease, and acquired resistance to chemotherapy remains a significant hurdle in its treatment. mtDNA, crucial for cellular energy production, is prone to mutations at a higher rate than nuclear DNA. These mutations can accumulate and disrupt cellular function; however, mtDNA mutations induced by chemotherapy in esophageal cancer remain unexplored.

Non-smoking and Non-drinking Oral Cancer Patients Are at Higher Risk of Second Primary Tumours.

Oral Dis

December 2024

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, University Medical Center Groningen, University of Groningen, Groningen, The Netherlands.

Objectives: This study aimed to explore differences in demographics, tumour characteristics and outcomes in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patients with a history of non-smoking, non-drinking (NSND) versus smoking and/or drinking (SD).

Materials And Methods: Newly diagnosed OSCC patients undergoing curative surgical treatment were prospectively included in OncoLifeS, a data biobank. Cox regression analysis was performed yielding hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs).

Pan-cancer analysis shows that BCAP31 is a potential prognostic and immunotherapeutic biomarker for multiple cancer types.

Front Immunol

December 2024

Department of Otolaryngology, the Affiliated Suzhou Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, Suzhou Municipal Hospital, Gusu School, Nanjing Medical University, Suzhou, Jiangsu, China.

Background: B-cell receptor-associated protein 31 (BCAP31) is a widely expressed transmembrane protein primarily located in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), including the ER-mitochondria associated membranes. Emerging evidence suggests that BCAP31 may play a role in cancer development and progression, although its specific effects across different cancer types remain incompletely understood.

Methods: The raw data on BCAP31 expression in tumor and adjacent non-tumor (paracancerous) samples were obtained from the Broad Institute Cancer Cell Line Encyclopedia (CCLE) and UCSC databases.

Objective: This study aimed to analyse the correlation between the expression of cell proliferation-associated antigen (Ki-67), cell cycle protein-dependent kinase 4 (CDK4), epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA) with the outcome and prognosis of patients with breast cancer (BC) undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT).

Methods: We retrospectively analysed the clinicopathological data of 231 patients with BC who underwent preoperative NACT at XX Hospital between 1 January 2018 and 31 December 2021. Logistic regression models were used to analyse factors influencing NACT efficacy.

Background: Prostate cancer (PCa) was the most common noncutaneous cancer among Nigerian men in 2020. Despite this high incidence, documented rates may be an underestimation.

Objectives: This study aimed to determine the hospital incidence rate, trends, and characterise the clinicopathologic features, and treatment outcomes of patients with PCa in our institution.
